Cool Last night, my bass player was smokin' HOT!

Obviously! In fact, so hot that he caught his speaker cabinet on fire! It was soooo awesome! We're in the middle of an Aerosmith song (Nobody's Fault), when the singer yelled "FIRE!" We grabbed the cabinet and threw it outside. Fortunately I was able to grab my phone and snap a few pics and get some video before we doused out the flames. I haven't seen a speaker catch fire since the summer of '83. Oh, the memories! Good times!

I have been playin' for 40 years ...never saw that before! Not even in my Grateful Dead days.
What brand bottom was it? Looks like a very small magnet on the back of basket. Bad wiring.....Funny!

It's just his practice rig. That's a 15" (or maybe 18"?) Peavey speaker. The magnet is huge though. Don't be fooled by the diameter you're seeing in that pics. That's not the magnet size.

I think what happened is that he has a passive cross-over in that cabinet, since it has the speaker and another driver of some sort for the high-end. Well, those passive cross-overs have a ceramic resistor in them that can get rather hot. He obviously got it too hot, and it caught the cone on fire. Same thing happened in '83.

Due to recent fires......

Joe don't you know... Pyrotechnics are no longer cool.

And you weren't playing "Burnin' Down the House".

No but, in 'Nobody's Fault' there is a lyric that says, "Everything is on fire".

Perhaps you should have been playing "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. Plausible deniability and all that for the insurance adjuster .

I am glad you were able to get the cabinet outside avoiding another 'Great White' incident.

In the 70s we were an Acoustic Research warranty center. There was a fatal combination of AR2a seakers and a Phase Linear power amplifier, used by many 'audiophiles' It seems that the Phase Linear was vry unstable and had no DC protection. The amplifier outputs would short and put the ~80VDC rail directly to the speakers voice coil - flame on. We saw hundreds of these failures. There was something bout the AR2a speaker's tweeter/crosover combination that woyuld drive the amp into oscillation, fry the tweeter, short the amps outputs and finally set the voice coil/cone on fire.

AR2a's were too cool! I had a pair in my dorm.

Finally pooped out and I moved on to Bose.
