This is going to hurt!

Google is now distributing StarOffice as part of the Google pack. A full fledged Office package that automatically updates and does not cost you a penny.

I bet in the coming months you will see some reaction of M$.

Maybe they'll just make Office free like they did with IE.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

I use OpenOffice on my laptop - superb. However, it's not fully compatible with MS-Office and my wife complains every time we travel as she can't manage her documents for her PhD thesis and various articles for publication. Biggest problem is in tracking changes (very different) and OpenOffice always manages to lose all her footnotes.........

I'm sure YOU know, but just to mention it: StarOffice is/was the basis of Openoffice. Both are basically more or less the same product, and since Google started to distribute StarOffice, they cost the same: NOTHING.

There is a new module available that teaches Office how to use the new Open document format files. Maybe that helps. But then M$ is and was always known to change things around just to make it harder for compeditors to compare directly.

OTOH with a compeditor that does 99.5% of what office does and a considerably lower price, some organizations already start to rethink their licensing policies. I know I would.
