The Perils of Concrete

OR, How I tore up my yard with a concrete truck.

As many of you know I've been trying to build a shop since April.

The rain as stopped me at every turn. So FINALLY today we're going to pour concrete. !!!!

The first truck sunk up to the axle in the yard...

My luck just isn't running right this year...

The first attempt to pull the truck out led to this...

If a truck that big gets stuck, I can only imagine what it would take to pull it out. Good luck.

I used to drive a cement truck and that was my biggest fear....burying the back end... If that drum is full, you gotta unload it to a cement scooter (over plywood laid on the lawn) then try to hook it out. My old Ford cement truck could lock out the rear axle to get both sides of wheels working together....I had to use em once...pulled like a train.

Yeah, They're unloading it now.. Using Wheelbarrows..

The Little winch truck they have apparently is designed to pull their trucks.

It's got a bar that drops down behind the rear wheels and braces it..

It didn't have any problems pulling the truck.. It only pulled it in deeper..

I'm glad I'm not ramrodding this job. I just have to sit back and watch for a change...

More as the day continues...

I'm gettin concrete poured in my back yard as we speak. They parked in the street and ran a 8 inch hose to the back. It's slow but it beats wreckin my yard and a trunk. Not to mention that "MaMa' would shot the drive ifin he took out her plants

have you considered an irrigation sysetm? Maybe expand the septic field some, eh?
Could lay some conduit for power/data/phone lines...
Has Texaco called and offered to put in a pipe-line yet?

Only good part - you get to sit back and watch.

I am re-doing the front and back yard as well right now. I had a 65 x 14 slab put in on the side yard for the boat and dog run. The concrete trucks here in south CA won't come onto the property for any reason due to cracking drive ways etc. or general liability and damage. A pump was used to get it from the front to the back with the concrete truck in the street. Certainly faster than wheel burrows. Looks like you had a much longer run. Good luck with your project.

And speaking of septic systems, it gets real shitty real fast when a cement truck runs one over.

"Yah, I was worried aboat that too" ( In his best Canadian accent.)

But he was well outside the boundries of the septic system. I got the original inspectors drawings before I started this project... You can see the corner flag in the center of the pic. It's 10" beyond the closest chance of a lateral line..

Tank is close to the house...30' I think.

That'd make one heck of a splash though wouldn't it.. To cave in the top of the tank and fall in... OOOOOHHHHHH !! Smelly !!!

We're on for the Pumper on Monday. And it's supposed to be hot and dry between now and then... I'm hoping I can finally get a slab up so I can start calling and bugging the building company to deliver my building...

Wow John!

I guess I am a bit surprised they even tried that given how wet it has been this year...

So are they going to do anything to repair the yard or is that chore left up to you?

Nope, the yard's on me...Unfortunately I laid down the path for them to take.

Maybe I can get one of the close farmers to make a pass thru with a plow.

Then we can roll it down and lay a gravel drive to the shop..

For now I'm gonna just level it as best as I can...

Gives Lindy a little more challenge with her motorcycle training..

She's bought herself a little starter bike and took the BRC.

Now she's riding all over the back 40. I told her once she could slam that thing around in the yard, She shouldn't have any issues with the street.

Talk to you later...
