Noob (sort of) Introduction & Purchase ?

Hello,

Just joined this forum and thought I would introduce myself. I owned a 99 K12LT that I purchased in 99 with 3300 miles on it. I sold the LT in 04 with 77K.

I have taken a hiatus from motorcycling since October of 05 and looking to get back on the end of this year or early 08. I am looking to go back to the LT since my new bride is interested in touring 2-up and because I really enjoyed this marvelous machine.

My question, I most likely will purchase a used LT and was curious what your impressions of the new design (05 & later) vs 04 or earlier?

Thanks you.

Regards Bruce

The 05+ bike are more expensive

But also....

have better low speed handling

more HP

different cockpit which works better for me

newer technology that has fixed several issues from the older design flaws

an electronic centerstand lift which is nice for easily raising the bike up on level ground. The flip side is that I think you lose some ground clearance from it.

you have a decent chance of finding a newer bike under warranty which is important to me. BMW = Buy More Warranty

the communication system has been upgraded to more easily integrate with current technology if that's your thing

Hey! Welcome back Bruce!

Yeah go with an '05 or newer. They run damn fine. No need to unplug temp sensors, cut brown wires, mess with cat code plugs. You may also get some manufactuer warranty going w/newer. Just be ready to opt for better seat.

Thumbs up

+1 on what Darren said, although I have not noticed less clearance on the 05, perhaps because my shocks are in better shape than on my 99 or my 03 LTs.
Also I did not get bikes with the BMW comm system, instead I use an Autocom unit.
My 05 is under warranty until August of 08, at which time I will decide whether I buy an extendsed warranty of buy a newer bike.
