Question Cell Phones?

With Cingular's FORCED obsolescence of all things AT&T branded, I'm in need of a new cell phone.

I do like Cingular's service and coverage - and am looking into one of the "smart" phones like the new Blackjack or 8525 so I can get "3G" speed (yes, available in my area ).

Rather than pay retail at the Cingular store ($199 for the Blackjack and $399 for the 8525), I've found some "deals" on the web for anywhere between "$0.99" and "$150" for each phone with service.

Anyone have any experience with these companies? Anyone recommend a particular one?

Thanks,

Gino

I carry 2 phones with different carriers, 1 personal, the other company. Boss gets really ugly if I go over on the company phone. 1 is Verizon, the other Cingular. Both have good points and not good points. I'd also consider Alltell. Getting a phone off of the web and not getting locked in a long term contract is one thing I would definitely look at real hard. The new Trio and phones like it are pretty neat. You might also consider the company that will let you try out their service for a month or so before you get locked in the contract. Personally would steer clear of Sprint, poor service, poor customer service.

Just make sure the phones are compatible with who your service provider will be.

I have the Treo 700w and am pleased with it. The keyboard is too small for my fingers. Other than that cool. Get to browse the web (have unlimited data plan).

You did not mention if you use the phone with a com system. I found out the hard way that some phones dol not use the 2.5mm jack. Bought a Samsung D-807 noted it did not have a 2.5 jack on it but dealer informed me Radio Shack had an adapter to fit. Well by the time I got around to checking on the adapter (one is not currently being made for this phone I am told it is to new) the 30 day return period was over. I now have a phone that will not connect to my com system until an adapter is made.

No comm. system to connect it to - so no worries there. Just wanted to make sure some of these internet companies were up to par as they're running close to $200 less than Cingular.

Contract term is not an issue - Cingular is locking you into a 2-yr term to get the lowest rate on the phone anyway.

Thanks all..
