Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Isn't life interesting...

All is well in your little world, and then one day, you discover that your favorite BMW site's overlords are reading and deleting you Private Messages; something that never happened before Verticalscope.

I've been a Member/Moderator/Administrator here for Years. And I'll bet you that this post will disappear as soon as Verticalscope reviews it.

Y o u R i d e . u s Here I come, actually already there, as are many of the long-term members here.

Come on over, you won't regret it.

Also interesting that of the 9000 + posts I've contributed here, all but a handful are gone, but the post count keeps ratcheting up.

Newby here, tell me more about this deleting of PM's. That is not what I signed up for here. I was told this is a friendly place with tons of info about my BMW.

There are one hell of a lot of Great folks here, and deep bench of knowledge on the BMW brand of bikes.

That said, while it's still a viable community and has value to members, Verticalscope seems to think they are the NSA, and have the right to read edit/delete Private Messages between members/moderators/administrators.

How do we know this? Good question.

I, and many others, receive an email when we receive a PM on this site.
You then log in to find the PM missing.

The email contains the message entered in the PM, so it was created, sent and received. The reception of the PM is what triggers the email from the site.

Only Administrators have the system rights to delete/edit PMs.

Verticalscope staff are the Administrators; I'm just a legacy administrator with almost none of the original admin rights and capabilities I've had for over a decade.

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Well that is very disturbing to hear. I was looking for a place to make friends & learn about my bike. Looks like this may not be the place for me. I'll need to read a little more & see what I think.

BTW I do see you show over 9800 post in your count but could only find 217 +-

Are you saying someone here removed all the other post?

Yes, the number of total posts listed should all be available to the membership.
Trouble is, when you click on my Name and go to my profile, you will see this:

Total Posts: 9,855
Posts Per Day: 2.32
Find all posts by DaveDragon
Find all threads started by DaveDragon

If you click on the links, you will see that there are only ~233 post now.

Someone, with System Level Access to the post database, has deleted them.

Interesting, no?

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Reminds me of why we left Yahoo Groups way back. Yahoo deleted all the technical data and posts over a year old. Pissed the group off terribly, so the move away happened, eventually to the much better group it became when overseen by our own gurus and administrators who did a super hero job for years.

When the present people (now jerks) took over things started going down hill fast. The loss of years of great technical information we had in the Hall of Wisdom was ridiculous, now this? Sad day indeed.

OK site owners and administrators, I'm thinking you have one chance - executed quickly - to make this right, with an explanation.

I received the PM also. When I logged in, it wasn't there.

I say let the market decide - free enterprise, as it were. If this continues to be a site worthy of participation, then it will be. Don't be afraid of competition. If there are other sites that people go to for the sake of their shared community, they will exist, also.

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Man looks like this problem goes a lot deeper then it looks like. I now wonder how many PM's really got deleted. That just seams like bad business to me. I've been on many different forums, car , truck ,bikes even lawnmower racing but have never seen anything like this. I'm afraid to even say much more as I do not want to be kicked off or banned or what ever it is this company does to you. I think I'll just shut up & go away. That is a shame to as it looked like a lot of very knowledge people are here with lots of info. Good luck everyone.

I don't get it. What is wrong with telling people about another site. Most of us use multiple sites. I see nothing in the rules that says this is an exclusive relationship.

I agree - this is total, 100% BULLSHIT. I can go back and see threads that Forum Members (for instance, Andy, or Katnapinn), FRIENDS I've known for years have simply disappeared from, after I had commented on their posts. I can't find any posts anywhere from either.

So the Forum here is free to take my $$ and then decide whom I get to associate with?

All because they were supposedly talking about another site?? WTF?

Wow, this site is really starting to suck.

I don't need/want a facebook look-a-like.
There is a thread on here asking how we like the new format. Can't reply to it as I
don't have the authorization to do so.

Exactly. Two examples that come readily to mind are ADVrider and (especially) the K1600 forum; they are frequently referenced and quoted on this site, and have been for some time.

Still waiting to hear the explanation by the site administrators.

Not sure about ADVrider but I was told the K1600 forum was owned by the people that own this site. I was also told about 2 other BMW forum in another thread & that post is still there (Not removed). Anyone know if these two forums are owned by this company or if ADVrider is owned by them?

Here is the other thread

The recent actions by the server staff, as well as their past history of less than stellar performance in resolving site issues, leads me to think that the drive for site operation is driven by advertiser revenue. That begs to wonder what the marketing department of some of the heavy hitter advertisers would think about the current issues of server staff intrusion into privacy issues; removal of member's PMs and past posts/threads; flagrant removal of longtime member's profiles and membership. As Dave sez - hmmmmmmmm?

Hey Dick, how come your Avatar has disappeared?

Just did a search on my posts, note that its limited to 1000 results, but if I pick the correct order I can still find all my posts back to 2005.....
I also tried to make a comment in that Admin thread and couldn't do it... figured it was a "notes from Admin" kinda thread they didn't really want comments on, so its locked.
Guess bitchin isn't being deleted, 'cause this thread is still here...

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

For a bit of backstory, this website evolved from an old email list started way back when the K1200LT was first released. We've moved through several iterations, and the main staff have done a stellar job growing things and reacting to user's needs.

But it's still a hobby for us, as well as them, and the amount of work, money, and time needed to maintain the site has increased a hundred-fold.

A decision was made to pass the administration of this website onto another group, who does this sort of thing professionally. That means they expect to get paid for their work, thus the proliferation of ads plastered all over every page.

Note that I don't see any of the ads, as I've been running an AdBlock extension for many years.

The recent kerfluffle has to do with some of the original admins and mods being upset about how commercial things were getting, and so they started up another website to get back to their roots and to cover a much wider range of bike brands and models.

Obviously, this is upsetting to a site that depends on advertising revenue based on user numbers, so any mentions of the new site are being censored, and those admins and mods have been banned and deleted.

I've been part of this community for 15 years or so, and I've had some great experiences and met some truly wonderful people. There's still a lot of good info to be had here on the K12LT, although it seems like the "newer" bikes are being covered in much more detail elsewhere.

That said, many of the banned folks are my friends, and have given so much of their time, energy, and knowledge to make this site what it has become. And I hate censorship on any grounds, not the least of which is for purely monetary reasons.

So it's up to each individual to decide whether this site offers them something worth their time and energy, or whether their efforts are better served elsewhere.

guess that explains why I got a notice of a PM from Andy but when I go to read it, it's not there. Still says I have an unread PM but no can access. Censorship gone amok! Where's George Orwell?

Yep, I got one of those as well. It sits right up there every time I open a BMWLT.com page, but there's nothing behind it . . .

It's not just random censorship - it's censorship to protect advertising revenue.

Anyone else having trouble getting to the Hall of Wisdom Articles? If I click on a name to link to an article I get this:

You don't have permission to access /ubbthreads/showthreaded.php on this server.

I think that's one of the problems, I haven't been able to get to the HOW articles for months, makes me wish I had downloaded PDFs of all of them instead of just a few. Anyway, I am now registered at the other site also, hopefully someone has those old HoW topics squirreled away somewhere and can contribute them to the new site.

Well this is interesting....
Not about to jump ship but....

A very old Australian advertising slogan. Singelton's IIRC

ADVERTISING, YOUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

Well as I choose not to have adds clutter up my UI, I've used aDblocck for ever,
and my experience on the site remains much the same as it has for the last 12 years.

Although missing now in this updated banner, heck there isn't even an LT. remember...

IT'S THE BIKE THAT BROUGHT US TOGETHER
BUT IT'S THE PEOPLE THAT KEEP US TOGETHER

To the newcomers.
A lot of really fine folks here. Wealth of good knowledge too.
Sorry that the PM's are being screwed with, that's not right...
but emails work just fine.
Think outside the box.

Cheers

p.s. The lack of technical files while annoying, is not insurmountable. Some where, some one has copied that info. Ask around.

this maybe true but whats the point of having a techinal/hall of wisdom link that they wont let me see. do I have to pay them to let me see what someone else wrote for everyone to see

Just got back from Vacation and found the missing private message. Sad really this site will lose a lot more from this coarse of action than it would with a little competition.

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

The long-term member/moderator, Katnapinn, has apparently been banned from this site. As an Administrator of this site, you would think that I would have received a notification of this action, along with a justification for the banishment.

The Overlords do not operate this way. Before the site ownership changed, we had standard operating procedures in place, which detailed the rules/guidelines we as admins and moderators followed to determine if an "infraction" by a member met the standard of banishment; those no longer exist, or, I no longer have access to them.

In any event, based on my digging and investigation of the system functionality changes made by the Overlords, it was simply the act of sending a PM to member(s) with the mention of the new site by name.

They, the Overlords, have setup automatic word replacement of certain key words; as evidenced by the test post I posted above, and the follow up screen shot of the original post.

They, the Overlords, also receive a PM or Notification when any user's post or PM contain any of the "key words".

They, the Overlords, then unilaterally make arbitrary decisions based on the key word violation; resulting in banishment, with no regard to the userís years of membership/moderation/administration or their contributions to this site.

In my not so humble opinion, the very real fact that the overlords take it upon themselves to arbitrarily edit or delete post and Private Messages of the membership is repugnant. The fact that they feel that this is appropriate behavior, or an appropriate and proportional response to the simple mention of another web site, competitor or not, speaks volumes about their fundamental lack of understand and appreciation of this community of members.

They purchased the site strictly because of the number of active members, the enormous number of posts, and the value these two factors play in monetizing the site. No consideration for the quality of content, the dedication of the membership to the community or the long and deep technical knowledge base present in this site; all of which they are systematically deconstructing.

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

I am not one to get involved in the politics here but it seems like a short term strategy if you are losing membership to another site the only winning strategy seems like making this site better not building a wall to try to keep members from escaping. I think East Germany tried it but it wasn't a success for them either.

Interesting:

I no longer have access to this sites Admin Panel...

Next step for you is the way of Katnappin. I certainly understand the frustration of you long-time moderators at all this, you guys really put a lot of effort toward keeping things from getting out of hand and neatly organized around here, once they ban all their moderators I wonder what will happen to this site

I'm riding the fence and monitor both forums just to see if things take off over there but if I think any new threads I start will go to the other place, which of course I apparently can't reference or else I will be banned from this site.

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Well, I've had about the fun & games I can stand here, so, I'm going to shoot out a PM or two, with the dreaded keyword "Ebola" I mean "Y o u R i d e . u s" and let the axe fall.

We'll see how they react.

If they dust-bin me as well, see you on the other side, or site...

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Dragon,

You can also come and see I - B M W... I also have an LT, and there's an LT forum there, but not as active as this one.
Of course, if you guys come, I won't have to be switching forums...

Something similar happened in B M K - K . C O M.
The site owner went off his meds and started dissing everybody.
He asked me not to post anymore regarding the LT.
Eventhough, the most active post at that moment in the site (most people had left by then), was mine about the LT.

So, enough was enough.
He never deleted my posts, they're still there, as he surely acknowledges they are valuable, and neither those of anybody else, including the ones that weren't friendly to him.

I can't understand why would somebody delete posts or PM (that's why they're personal). Anyways, this is not good.

Welcome over my other site if you would!

Re: Things that make you go hmmmmm.

I sent the PM to everyone on this thread.

The Text I sent was changed, in the copy I sent myself.

The new sites name was changed to bmwlt.com

Has anyone received it?

Yes, noticed the NEW owner is Canadian. Don't get me wrong, I like
Canadians as long as they speak the Queens English or ours.
