I'm thinking about taking a ride up to West VA over a long Memorial Day weekend (5 days). Can anyone suggest must see routes and things to see while I'm there?

check out Hawk's Nest State Park near Ansted... and the New River/Gaully River area. Big Whitewater Rafting country, great riding. This area is maybe an hour out from Charleston and some of the finest scenery anywhere. Lotsa tourists like the mountain tops, but the river valley areas are just as excellent.

Another awesome scenic and riding area is Seneca Rocks. Get ther via Route 219/55 up the east WV Mountain range. Lotsa banjo music, but great riding.

For something completely different check out the Palace of Gold, a Krishna temple, near Moundsville, WV. (I'm not of that persuasion and I'm not trying to convert anyone, it's just the most unusual thing you'll ever see on a mountaintop in a rural state!)

Nice riding roads get you to it. Be sure to walk 1/4 mile down the road to see the temple, also.

A disclaimer: that's their photo from their web site. I was there last summer and the place needs lots of renovation. Broken concrete, fading paint, etc., but they are working on it. It's still visually impressive and worth the tour.
