Why not take 11 to Fort Frances then 71 to Kenora then 17 back to Thunder Bay. Ride along 11 to Fort Frances is quiet, and 71 through the Lake of the Woods has some nice scenery.

Re: Thunder Bay to Kenora or Ft Francis?

We are back this afternoon from our Duluth, Thunder Bay, Fort Frances & back to Mpls. The highways in Canada were amazingly smooth and well marked. A real credit to your highway maintenance people. We don't seem to get roads like that here in the States. Hwy 11 was really lonely - absolutely no gas between Kekabeka (sp?) Falls and Atikokan so plan ahead (we did fortunately). Lots of logging trucks on the road but it was otherwise empty.

We stayed overnite at a resort cabin on Lake Niobe (Lodge) about 16 miles East of Atikokan that was immaculate & with a friendly owner. We had an incredibly strong crosswind Oct 1st between the Falls and Lake Niobe. Locals were talking about it also.

The ride was beautiful with lots of white capped lakes, but we saw exactly no wildlife except for a chipmunk that crossed the road in front of us. Color was at peak & the blue sky really brought it out.

THX for the input. Next time it will be 17 to Kenora.

Iím glad you had a good trip. Yes, Hwy 11 from Thunder Bay to Fort Frances is quiet, more so this time of year. For your next trip, you may want to start at Sault Ste Marie along the north shore of Lake Superior. Especially scenic to Wawa. Hwy 129 from Chapeau to Thessalon is also nice.
