A little ride today and crash

OK, today 600 km total ride with about 350 km of gravel, hard packed mud and ruts. Did my first face plant today at 70 kph. Some damage to the bike, but I am OK. Got in a hard packed rut about 8" deep and the bike wanted out, so it went down with me on it at 70 kph. Took we 10 foot long tree branch and bent the pannier out so it would not hit the wheel. This happened about 1/2 way along the ride. I'm OK, just my neck is a little sore.

A couple pictures.

On a sidenote… I find it odd that you Canadians use km for the unit of measure to describe distance, but feet as the unit of measure to describe length. That's okay, we still love you.

40+ years of riding and this is my first put down. First scratch is in, not the fun begins.

Still keep an eye on your neck or anything that hurts at least a couple days. Doctors orders you 'd be fine.

Be careful though, the riding season is just beginning, we don't bounce back as quickly as we used to.

When riding offroad I prefer soft bags. I don't want to lay under hard cases in a crash. Glad you are ok. What gear were you wearing when you went down? I tend to break collar bones and ribs.

I would have thought that the hard cases protect your bones from the weight of the bike.

Glad to hear you're not too badly hurt. Hopefully yesterday's stiff is not too much stiffer today. Are you having any 20/20 hindsight that we might all benefit from?

Re: A little ride today and crash

I guess is depends on how you go down and where you get trapped. My DS is a DR650, so not a very heavy bike.

Re: A little ride today and crash

As everyone else has said...glad you are ok!! The important thing is that you can walk away...the bike can be repaired or left with it's badge of honour. The body can take a bit longer...especially at your age !!

Take care of yourself...you will want to be healthy for you trip in June!!

See you then.

Nope. Hard cases can be very hard on your legs and feet in a crash.

Should of slowed down. Keep out of ruts. (the problem was the whole road was full of ruts) Hard to see from the pictures how bad they were.

Neck is still a little sore, but getting better.

Some of the gravel roads I would of taken the K16, but not these logging roads.

Re: A little ride today and crash

Hi Garry:
Glad you are ok! You know you are approaching senior status and we don't heal up as fast as the young guys. I know the side roads and trails are fun but I prefer to stay on the pavement. I did have a dirt bike many years ago and had lots of fun with it but now I will stay on the hard stuff. Turning 71 this year and want to reach 95 and still be riding.
Yeah right???
Cheers,
Jim
