Pavement confirmed

This is a very late response to a question earlier in the year.
Over Christmas we went to the Island ( Vancouver Island )to visit my dad.
We rented a Subaru Outback, with paddle shifters. That was fun.
I wanted to see the ocean so we took a drive up highway 14 towards Jordan River and Port Renfrew.
This is a nice winding road.
At Port Renfrew we decided to try the road to Lake Cowichan. Lo and behold it is well marked and paved all the way, facilitating a round trip to Victoria or Northwards to Nanaimo, Etc Etc
Many 30 and 40 KMH corners and switchbacks, also a good view of the very prevalant Clearcuts on Vancouver Island.
About 150 KM of no centerline.
A very enjoyable loop and highly recomended.

Happy new year and enjoy.

Re: Pavement confirmed

Eric, I did that trip early September I thought the road to Port Renfwe was a little rough , but after that was much better. But I enjoyed the ride that day even with the rain.

Re: Pavement confirmed

Yes there are undulations in the road, I would be leary trying to race it, it is a keep your eyes open kind of road.
you have to remember that that part of the world was gravel access only for many years.
Mostly for loggers and fishermen and those hardy souls that chose to live on the rugged west coast.

I think the important part of this story is that access to victoria is no longer just the Malahat.
There are now other options for getting there or out.

I am sure you enjoyed it.
