Where do you buy your tires?

Just wondering where my fellow CDNs buy their tires? Any particular location and brand to recommend? How many of you are riding into the USA and putting on a new set before coming back?

Riding on BT020 now and will keep them. I'll order mine from Double R Leather in Erin when I need some new ones. I bought a tire changer and made a balancer so I'll be doing my own tires. If you want to try the changer let me know.

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

Just got new Metzeler Z6 while at BMW Rally TN. Saved about $ 150 over best price I found in Canada, and over $ 250 better than Dealer

I have been buying my tires in Canada, almost $500 for a set of Metzler Z6 in January for my R1200RT.

I just bought a set of Michelin Macadams for an airhead of mine from,
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/

$60 front tire, $73 rear with free shipping in US, so I had them sent to a mail drop in Port Huron, Michigan 1 hour away and a nice day for a ride. I had also purchased a set of tubes making the total just over $200 which allowed me to use a $20 dollar coupon. Total $181 and customs waved me though after declaring them.

A friend also ordered a set of Metzlers for his GSA from the same place for a total of $261 and it cost him $38 in taxes at the border.

If I stay with the Z6's they were $281 so I will definitely order from them again.

You could probably set up a mail drop in Niagara Falls area. If you are interested I could try and find the coupon code. It worked for me and it was only a couple of weeks ago that I ordered.

Thanks everyone. I have to go to the States over the long weekend so I may just order something from there and bring them across. Gary, I might just take you up on your offer. I'll be in touch. thanks.

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

Purchased Michelin Road Pilot 2 for CDN 360 from the States. Will pickup this weekend and install back home. With the strength of the dollar and no tax, I thought this was a pretty good deal.

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

I had my original Metzlers replaced at 25,000Km at my dealer - Open Road BMW in Newmarket. (They still had several 1000 more Km left on them, but I was leaving on a 9000 Km trip so I changed them before I left) Discounted Cost was $283 and $158 in Aug 2008.

Priced tires last year as well. Thought I would replace during the winter. Same discounted tires ended going up $100 more, even on sale, in January this year.

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

Realwing, could you clarify your quotes? Was that $283 for the rear and $158 for the front for a total of $441? Did that include tax? Just trying to understand in order to compare apples to apples.

My purchase price for the Road Pilot 2 tires was CDN $ 360 for both tires and no tax. Thanks.

Oops I screwed up the prices!!!! (Fingers sometimes disconnected from brain)
Here are corrected prices:
Front: List price was $211.95 and selling price was $158.96
Rear: List price was $244.95 and selling price was $183.71 (NOT $283)
Labour was $163.20

Taxes are additional on all of the above for a total cost of $571.63

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

Had a look at my tires on my 06 LT and the front looks good while the back seems to have only a little tread depth left. Anyone got a lead on tires out west or am I better to order from a US supplier and have them installed here. Should I go with the original equipment Metzlers or is there a better alternative??
Thanks for any advice you can offer.......

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

At the bike show in December I found out that Dunlop now makes a tire that is rated for the LT. There is a little hole in the wall bike shop at 871 Kipling Ave. called Pro 6 Cycle. They work with a lot of race bikes but they are also a dealer for Dunlop. I think i will give them a try this year instead of Metzelers. They make a good race tire and think they would make a good road tire to boot. He talked about a $360 price for the pair. Pricing and wear are two items that cannot be compared between any two drivers. I always liked the Z6's on my other Beemers but not rated for the LT beast. He actually showed me the new dunlop catalog with a listing directly for the LT.

Jim,
I have purchased from, http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...Rear-Tire.aspx Right now the Metzeler 880 is $186 US with free shipping in the States. You could try and set a mail drop in Oroville, WA and have them delivered there. I live near Port Huron , MI and there are many businesses that accept parcels delivered to them for a $5 charge, on pick up.

Things to consider,
-are you going to mount tire yourself
-is there a dealer or someone willing to mount your tire if you do not buy from them, if so how much extra are you going to pay
-cost of shipping into Canada if you go that route
-hassle of going to pick up tire if you can arrange a mailing address in states, unless you can ride your LT
- I was lucky enough to be waived through customs when declaring my airhead tires at $186 you might be alright.

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

Thanks Nick. I have a call in to a local dealer for pricing and installation This will give me an idea and then I will compare with prices from superstore including freight. I also have the option of picking up the tire in Oroville which is not too far away.
The local dealer here is fairly expensive on most items, but is now under new ownership so I'll give them a try.
Thanks
Jim.

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

Got a price of $275.00 for the rear tire, installed plus tax. The tire is the Metzler marathon 880. That seems to be a reasonable tire price for Canada.
Cheers,

Re: Where do you buy your tires?

I agree if you shop around you can find some pretty good deals in the U.S. When I take my bike south of the border I regularly get tires, farkles and regular maintenance done of my GSA. I find that even with exchange I am saving about a 1/3.
