Vancouver Island .... Camping ?
Two bikes are headed upto the pacific northwest @ Sept 9-14, Olympic national forest in Washington state with a side trip of a few days onto vancouver island.
We are going pulling trailers and camping out.
Is there Sercure fenced (bear proof) areas ?
Are the islands bears a PITA like they are elsewhere ?
What would be a good course of action doing what we are ?

dont keep any kind of food in your tent and you wont have a prob. been camping in B.C. most of my life and never had an issue, I hear you can get bear spray (pepper spray) but i wouldnt try to bring it over the border, never felt the need for it myself

I have camped all over Vancouver Island and never had a problem with bears.
They are a much bigger problem in the National Parks like Banff, Jasper and Revelstoke. I would suggest you leave your hand cannon at home. If you get caught with an unregistered gun up here, they will put you in jail and you will face criminal charges. Anyway there is no one to shoot up here. The people are nice. Scott, if you have any detailed questions, please feel free to ping me as I live in Parksville on Vancouver Island during the summers and know the area quite well. I hope you have a nice trip. Ron

Vancouver Island bears are all of the Black Bear type, no grizzlies.
If you are camping on the island, the Provincial sites are very safe none are fenced.
Bears can smell food a mile away, never bring any food into your tent or have food odors on your clothes. Keep food in bear safe containers provided at the sites or at least 75 feet or so from your tent. When hiking take a bear bell with you and make noise and talk frequently.
I carry a bear repellant if I hike into bear frequented wilderness areas, this is not necessary at drive in camp sites. Hope this helps.

Fort Steele Campground is in Cranbrook BC up North. No where near
