All This Spam

With all the spam we are receiving for football and now baseball games, would it be wise to have any new member wait 24 hours before they can post? This may be a convenience to the real new members but may help cut down the spams.
Thank you!!!!!

Where have you been for the last month, out of the country or something? Oh ya, I guess you were (LOL). The "spam" does not show up on your screen, it is being created by probably one individual who makes up a new username and provides a link to football/baseball games, usually under the camping forum. In my original post, I meant to say inconvenience, instead of convenience to new users wishing to join our site.
I am sure the Admins can block this persons ip address, or at least consider my suggestion.

Exclamation Re: All This Spam

To Mikes point:
They appear under the "New Member", "Camping" & "Bike Talk" sections and all have a catchy phrase in the subject line and generally only have 1 or 2 posts.
When you look at the post they have an active hyperlink that may/will direct you to a malicious web site possibly infecting your computer with keystroke logging/recording or CPU monitoring/viewing software. BE WARNED before hitting the link!

Re: All This Spam

I'll see what we can add to the site to help combat this. I know we can at least break the links they are posting.

What is the system following the click of the exclamation sign below the spammer's handle? I just type in the word 'spammer' and submit the post. Then what? The OP gets banned, butt not their ISP?

The report function sends an email to all the mods/admins alerting us to the issue.

The post is investigated, and if the member is found to be a spammer, their account and IP are banned, and their posts are removed.

The more we ban, the more IP's we can block, and remove their ability to create multiple accounts.

Thanks to all the mods and members for reporting and removing spam!

Cheers,
- JB

Re: All This Spam

JB, Thanks for the reply to Dicks question.
Dick when you send a message I get an E-Mail to my phone but if I'm at work I have to wait till I get home to ban the IP & Handle. As stated all mods & Admins get this Email so sometimes the post is already removed before I get to it but please keep sending the report.

Re: All This Spam

I usually click on that mark and type in "Spam". I still think it is coming from one person who keeps registering under different names. By blocking the registration for 24 hours may stop this person from posting.

We don't go to that extreme unless we've been hit hard enough to mess up the site's physical performance. However we can look into more deterrents at the registration level.
