Plans for 2014

Thought I'd ask where everyone has planned to ride to this coming year?

I'm pretty sure I'm heading to the west coast, just not sure it is going to be in a straight line.

Re: Plans for 2014

This past summer we went as far west as possible in Canada, within spitting distance of Alaska. This summer we have a less ambitious plan, we are planning a big circle from the shores of Lake Huron to the southern edge of Algonquin Park, south along the Ottawa River and then into Quebec's Eastern Townships. We will head back to home through Vermont, PA, New York State, Ohio and Michigan. We have friends to visit along the way and a few places we have been near to but not had the time to explore. I have budgeted 3 weeks but can stretch that if necessary.

If my left knee holds up, a fellow rider in our club and myself are headed for the artic circle in Alaska. On the way we plan on attending the moa rally in st. Paul and anything else that hits our fancy on the way and back. No interstates, no franchise foods and no reservations are our guidelines.

Re: Plans for 2014

ULT, I did the AK trip two years back, you'll love it. If you run the ALCAN going up take the Stewart on the way back down. The Stewart is MORE in keeping with the great wilderness you envision about AK. PM me if you need some planning tips... I learned a great deal about riding an RT up there which will make my next trip a lot easier. I'm going back up to Hyder in the next couple years.

PS.. Fast Eddies restaurant and campground has great food and the showers are AWESOME.

Also have a couple smaller trips planned for next year, April 26, 2014 ride to eat to Mansfield Ohio Crackerbarrel and then the weekend before labour day a camping trip to Prince Edward County in Ontario.

My "big trip" will be a double loop from Portland OR on a rented RT (allows more time out West). The first loop has us heading east to Ketchum, ID via Hell's Canyon, then up 75/93 and through Glacier NP to Banff and Jasper, back through the BC mountains to Washington, then over Route 20 through No. Cascades NP to Victoria, BC, then back to Portland via the west side of Puget Sound. The second loop takes us down to Crater Lake, then over to the coast, down all the way past Big Sur, then over to Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP, Yosemite, Lassen Peak NP and back to Portland. 3+ weeks.

Back and forth to work about 230 times sprinkled with a few 1-2 day rides somewhere in AZ and/or NM. I want to take a ride out to the spaceport but who knows - maybe.

A few more years and I'll have enough vacation time that I can actually do something fun, AK is the plan but it's at least a couple years out.

MOA Rally in Minnesota is the only inked plans yet. Clicked off 20 Western and Southern states in 2013, need to move closer to the goal in 2014 !

Since CCR is in my back yard I have more time for other trips. Plan to do a RTE to the USAF museum in the spring similar to the US Naval Aviation museum we did a while back. Then a trip to the New England area to pick up the last 4 states I need to achieve all 48 on this LT.

John, was wondering if you had something against Ohio! You'll need a SOLID day or even more to take in everything at the museum, it is something to see. While your up there, you need to ride the "Triple Nickel", HWY 555.

Very modest: Indirect route from Pensacola, FL to Harrison, AK for a couple of days on two or three of the routes on that city's website, then back home, as soon as the spring temps rise to wussie level.

I have been there before, just not on a bike. We will drive up on a Friday and do the museum on Saturday then ride home Sunday. I think we had a but 8-10 for the Pensacola trip so I hope to have as many on this one.

I don't really know how I missed Ohio but I did. It was not intentional. 555 looks like a fun one. Thanks

I was thinking the same thing. Depending on timing, maybe I can meet you guys at the museum. I'm working at Fort Knox, KY but home most weekends.

Same here, keep me informed of the timing. I still have a house about 10 minutes from the museum in which my daughter and her family are in now. I'm sure that I'll ride up there a few times a year to visit them and friends from my former VTX group.

Just watch the weather trends before you go. Typically the second week of April works pretty well as that is when we have Spring Training Camp (except this year it is a week earlier due to Easter). But there have been bouts of snow then and temps down in the high 20's. And this is all at the south end of the parkway.

Re: Plans for 2014

Gbob, if you stop at Walmart to change oil, grab one of those aluminum foil Turkey roasting pans and ask the auto folks if you can change it in the lot outside the garage. They are generally very kind and will dispose of the used oil for you. Not sure how far you'll be traveling but my rear tire was shot by Fairbanks and I knocked a headlight out on the ALCAN in Yukon. Trails End BMW/Harley didn't stock much of anything in the way of tires so you may want to call and reserve or order something prior. There are several small independent bike shops that are familiar with BMW's and do good work. So maybe check with a few and save yourself the oil change hassle. I say hassle because you'll probably not want to do it yourself by the time you get there. You will ride MUCH longer days than you planned for just to take it all in.

Re: Plans for 2014

Wow, lots of you guys are way ahead of me with the planning thing. I'm thinking I'll meander towards Winslow AZ so I can take a picture. From there I'll head for CA, up to Oregon & Washington. Probably head back southeast and hit Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, before turning east thru New Mexico, Texas, etc... Probably won't start heading north until after passing thru Tenn.
I had a pretty slow summer for me this year and plan to just meander this next summer away. No particular destinations set, just some ideas of pics I might want to add.

I assume you mean Arkansas? Harrison is a great place to base yourself in Arkansas. We ride there 3-4 times a year. Wonderful riding roads in that whole area. If you would like some suggestions of what roads to hit while you're there shoot me a PM or an email.

Re: Plans for 2014

2014 trips planned . . . hope to make them all but you never know!!
Living in Cincinnati - looks like all the rides are in the central US / midwest for me . . .

STC (Spring Training Camp)
Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge
Stecoah, NC
April 10-12
350 miles one way
Got to get the taxes done early - and it could be chilly

BMWRA Rally
Barber Motorsports Park and Museum
Birmingham, AL
May 29-31
500 miles one way
1st time to the Barber Museum - can't wait!!

BMWMOA Rally
Minnesota State Fairgrounds
St. Paul, MN
July 24-27
720 miles one way
Both daughters w/grandchildren live just west of the Twin Cities

Curve Cowboy Reunion
The Chattanoogan Hotel
Chattanooga, TN
375 miles one way
August 26-29
Can't wait to make new acquaintances and renew old ones!!

SMFR (Smoky Mountains Fall Reunion)
Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge
Stecoah, NC
October 16-18
350 miles one way
Last ride before snow falls in the Smokies - and it could be chilly
and remember not to speed!!

Looks like the end of June is open hmmm - unfortunately not being
retired, like some of our illustrious members, limits the length of time on each of the rides!!

Re: Plans for 2014

So I've been following this tread and am thoroughly impressed with the trips that are planned by the posters. What I'm wondering though is......when the hell do you people find time to work. If I did a third of what some have planned, I'd be out of a job and divorced.

Re: Plans for 2014

Well since you asked nice. When I retired from the military I worked HVAC for a few years. Doc said I couldn't do that anymore so I went back to school to teach (hence board name). So I have summers off which allows me to enjoy my favorite activity.
Second part of the equation is my Mrs is from England and she likes going home to visit family most years. This means separate vacations. Now that isn't to say we don't vacation together. We make at least one longish ride together to somewhere each summer. We spent a couple weeks at Yellowstone via motorcycle a couple years ago, Fontana/Tail of the Dragon/Ashville another, Gettysburg, Skyline & BRP another and so on.
When I was military I spent 3 weeks out of almost every month deployed somewhere. Missed out on a lot of family life and vacation was almost unheard of. I've done my level best to make up for that since getting out. My kids ride as well, which makes riding a family affair

Plan on heading down to Garmisch and hitting the Alps for a week the end of May. A couple of friends will be flying in and join me as we scratch one off the bucket list.

Re: Plans for 2014

So you are stationed in Germany? Where abouts? Regardless it is a great location as a home base for heading out to almost anywhere in Europe or the Med.... Enjoy the Alps ride. Garmisch is a treat to see itself.

Re: Plans for 2014

Had this planned for last year but I went a 4 week Europe trip with friends from the US and than I worked for 3 month in Dubai. I see no obstacles so far for 2014.

I have a lot of the details worked out, the rest is adventure... If anyone cares to join, hit me up.

Google maps does not recognize some ferries. I am only planning to hit Istanbul once, there are several ferries across the sea of Marmara.

Re: Plans for 2014

AG, man I can't remember when I was there last... maybe late 1970's? Use to be a really good assignment but the US presence was small back then. In any case a great location for making lasting memories. If you haven't been and you still have some time in theater, there are some great rides and roads in Norway. Get to the Southwestern side around Stevanger (sp). I put 127k on a Harley in 2 years running all over Europe, Med., and the UK, great times

Re: Plans for 2014

We own a business that is busy from sept/October to June so we are able to take longer holidays in summer and a week or two in the winter.

Re: Plans for 2014

Teach, I was thinking about trying to hit the arctic circle up there but my wife doesn't like to ride and taking a couple weeks of leave on the motorcycle w/out SWMBO isn't in the cards.

Re: Plans for 2014

AG, consider a flight. Small airport in Stevanger or fly her to Oslo and pick her up there. I think if you plan the ride the right way (nice cabin for a few days along the route) she'd love it. You don't need to ride hundreds of miles a day for a nice biking vacation. After all the object is to see the sights and take in the local culture.
Just something to ponder
