Iron Butt Rally begins . . .

Some of y'all may have noticed I've been a bit absent lately, as I've been prepping for the Iron Butt Rally, which runs July 1st-12th.

You can find out more info about the IBR here, and get the official Daily Reports here.

You can also read through the 2011 IBR Daily Reports here to get a feel for what the IBR is really like.

I won't be posting while I'm on the ride, but my wife is maintaining a basic blog at kenmeese.com.

I'll do my best to do the K1600 proud . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

You don't. They purposely used codes so that no one can help other riders by telling them where someone else is. Each rider has his plan, and most want to keep it to themselves.

It MAY become apparent who some of them are late in the rally due to the posted reports, but the intent is to keep them as anonymous as possible.

It's always interesting to see the radically different strategies in use. This year, strategy is more important than ever, it seems.

Re: Iron Butt Rally begins . . .

It's really interesting watching the tracking site and seeing a few riders riding past my house. Not close enough for me to see them but right in my regular riding area. The reason seems to be associated with the Trent / Severn waterway.

It looks as if there are only about 1/2 of the hundred bikes or less shown on the spotwalla display. Were they required to carry SPOT or was it voluntary? I'm really curious what the dispersion would look like if I could see all the bikes locations.

It was voluntary to allow one's track to be shown on the "Public" page. Some did not.

Would be nice if they all were required to carry spot but could opt out of publishing on the page. That way when a rider encounters an issue, they know the position for aid & rescue.

I counted 64 out of what I think is 97 bikes in the rally, it is voluntary to post to the public.

There are a lot of FJR riders that run in this rally. fjrforum.com is a great place to keep up too.

Try as I might, I can't seem to find the location and general times of the checkpoints.
I would like to drop in on one if possible. Stopped in on one in suburban Chicago a couple of rally's ago and would like to do so again.
Anyone have that info?
