I ruined a helmet today

I was struck in succession by three fist sized rocks kicked up and hurled at me by a Tractor Trailer. The first hit so hard that it rocked my head back. The second hit me in the front chin of the helmet forcing my head forward and knocked my chin into my chest. The third slammed dead center of the faceplate, knocking my head to the right and completely shattered and tore away the face shield. The whole incident happened in super slow motion.

“Oh look…that large rock is heading right for me…..Wow!…look at the size of that thing…I hope it’s just a dirt clop….nope…that don’t look like dirt…and there you go…right over the windshield heading right for my damn head….You Bastard!....and why is everything moving so slow…OH 5HIT!.... this is going to hurt”

KAPOWW!!!

Lightning Bolts….Stars…Stars…Stars…Saturn Rings…Tweedy Birds……

Each impact was forceful enough to cause immediate unconsciousness if not for protection. I was venting the helmet because of fogging, so it was ironic that the wind forced the face shield down just seconds prior to the first impact. It was a miracle I stayed up while traveling at close to 90 MPH. God telling me to slow down?

The helmet has a large hole/indentation knocked into the forehead. A small fragment of the one that hit my chin was still lodged in the chin/mouth vent when I arrived to work. It was the size of a flat golf ball and almost the shaped of a spear head. This’ll make a nice paper weight. There is still a fragment of the face shield still attached to the ride side of the helmet. I’m gonna have to trade in my mundane simple cell phone for a camera phone so I can take pictures of these types of events. I’d post this in my Harley-Davidson Forum but it’ll just cause too much controversy.

I’d have a Trophy to hang on my home office shelf if I didn’t have to hide this from my wife and daughter. Good thing I have 3 other helmets.

Re: I ruined a helmet today

Imagine wearing a half helmet...! Ouch! Your head bucket did its job and likely saved your bacon! Glad you are OK!
If you can identify the truck you can go after their insurance for a replacement helmet and whatever else got damaged.

Wow! Glad that you're okay. You should share your story as much as you can. Hearing stories like that can help people understand why wearing a good quality full face helmet is smart for many reasons nut just falling off the bike or crashes. Now we'll be waiting for pics

Re: I ruined a helmet today

Should have only been a double strike. But have you ever tried to dodge a blow only to run right into a counter punch.

From the outside it probably looked like I deliberately ran into that third strike.

I’ve been knocked in the head a dozen times. I’ve been punched in the mouth more times than I can remember. The one that took out the face shield scared me into a new religion.

Re: I ruined a helmet today

I'm glad that you are OK and your post is a great reminder for me to continue to keep wearing the full face helmet, even though it's hot out there in the summer.

Probably good too to remember to stay as far away from the big trucks as possible too. I really hate to be beside or behind any longer then necessary. Those horror stories are here too.

Re: I ruined a helmet today

WOW! Glad you're okay. Can you put any photos up? I'd love to put that on our FB page for NC MC safety program. If you don't mind, of course.

And my similar story... I was sitting stopped at a stoplight as a dump truck came thru the intersection. I noticed something on the roadway and the truck glanced it with tire. It flew up into my face shield and knocked my head back, as you said also. The object landed in my lap and I stuck it in my jacket pocket for further investigation - the light changed before I could look. Whn I got to my destination, I took it out and it was a steel flange about 4" in diameter that had been run over and folded in half. Put a big scar on my face shield. Eye and face protection is important at all times, eh?
