Dallas to Taos, NM--Interesting route suggestions?

Looks like I will be visiting family in Taos, NM in early June. I'm thinking it might be fun to ride there from Dallas instead of flying, and then have the bike there to escape the in-laws and explore the area.

Any suggestions for the trip there?

Las Vegas NM is a cool little town. 518 out of LV to Taos is an interesting ride! Don't know of any good rides TO there though

Re: Dallas to Taos, NM--Interesting route suggestions?

I rode through that area last June and blogged about some highlights. Here's a link: http://rbrtmotorides.com/page/3/

Scroll back to find the "Blue Swallow Motel" (Tucumcari) post and then work forward for as many posts are relevant. My ride went through Taos to Durango, then back to Santa Fe (through Taos), then north to Colorado through Taos. We took different routes which you may want to read about.

But there are miles of great riding out there.

I have done that ride out to Tucumcari and there really is nothing attractive about it until you make your way up to Toas from there. And the heat will be so brutal heading up through northwest Texas that you will want o travel at night. Just my two cents.

Re: Dallas to Taos, NM--Interesting route suggestions?

When you ride Las Vegas to Taos, you'll pass Sipapu Ski Area, which for 25+ years has been the site of the annual NM BMW club rally.

It's a good one.

Thanks, RB, Kent!

We're talking about the second week of June, so it should only be low 100s, not the normal 120s (lol).
