Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Re: Why Do We Ride?

When I ride my mind focuses and I have a feeling of control that is a bit intoxicating, I also feel safer at higher speeds which is probably not true but feels good. When driving a car I much more prone to distraction.

Re: Why Do We Ride?

I ride because it HURTS my back so DANG MUCH!! The back is evil and must be punished!

I thought by riding I could retrain the muscles and they'd quit acting up, but this plan failed.

The two main reasons for me are, I just love being outdoors & my LT cost me at 50 mpg less than any car would.

If this is a test, I'd say that the answer is:

because we have Harleys, and it's free?

Actually not true in my case, I have a VW TDI Jetta Wagon and it gets slightly better mileage than the R1200RT.

I ride because I get good MPG, i have fun riding , i am able to split lanes and reach my destination faster and the most important reason - i grew up riding instead of driving so its more natural to me.

Re: Why Do We Ride?

Nice article. I love the outdoors! Blame it on Scouting, parents, grandparents, the dog... wait I don't have a dog right now. Anyway on a bike I experience what I'm riding through. I'm a participant, not just an observer. Something very primal and cathartic about it. A day in the saddle is better than years of therapy in an office ...and cheaper too. I ride because it makes my world better.

I couldn't click on the link simply because I don't need anyone telling me why I do something. That almost seems preposterous to me, on some level. I don't know why YOU ride. But I sure know why I ride. And that's good enough ... for umm ... me.

You are right, my point was that riding a bike to save $$ is bogus. I enjoy riding my bike even if I have no particular destination, I drive the car because I have to get somewhere.

I tell the missus "I ride because it keeps me sane".
Missus says "it's not working very well."
I say "it would work better if I had a new bike."
Missus says "see I told you it's not working."

Re: Why Do We Ride?

Whatever I save on gas, I spend on tires.

I ride bcz I love riding; so much so that I no longer own a car.

And, driving a car cross country would be way too boaring for me. Since it's fun on a bike, I wind up spending more $$ on motels, food, and gas than if I just owned a car. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be buying a new crash helmet, new summerr boots, new rain boots, new summer jacket, new summer gloves if I just had a car.

Yep, sold my car to get the bike.

I've got a herniated disc so riding in a car for more then 2hours hurts like hell. But sitting on a saddle i can ride all day. So I guess riding for me is like medical marijuana.

The last year I kept every receipt for my LT was 2010 & the cost per mile for everything including extra accessory's was less than 12 cents a mile. The break down is on a post somewhere here.

Same as considering a bike transportation rather than hobby.

If you think it's cheap transportation you've omitted bringing home some lumber from home depot or getting the weekly groceries.

Few years ago, wife and I liked to ride our Airheads with another couple. Since it was for "fun" and not transportation, this meant four 40 mpg motorcycles. That's the fuel burned equivalent of a 10 mpg car. Of course we could all have made the trip in our diesel Mercedes carrying all the people and all the luggage and gotten 35 mpg. One insurance policy, too.

Bottom line: motorcycling is an honorable and justifiable hobby. No need for buyer's remorse or falsely defending/justifying/rationalizing it on economy grounds. You've earned it and no guilt required. In fact, you deserve a BMW.

When it's your only form of transportation, it's no longer a "hobby" . . .

Nope.

I was riding long before I met her, and so she understands that it's something that's important to me. She supports me in it fully, as I support her choices and her desires.

Isn't that how it's supposed to work?

Actually, if you did click on it (or look at the October issue of Motorcyclist) you'd see that Keith is telling us why HE rides.

But, I liked your answer anyway - good to see some things never change :-)
