Barn find - this is what I live for.

Yep, they're STILL out there.

Just picked up a 1972 (Mars orange) Honda Trail 90 with 207 miles for pocket change.

The story: It was bought by his dad brand spanking new along with a Trail 70
for mom. Mom crashed shortly after she started riding and dad parked the 90
permanently, never to be ridden again. Dad passed away a few years back... and
it's just been sitting there - FOR FORTY YEARS!

207 miles - yeah, RIGHT!

OK, I'm an idiot, I'll go look at it....

I looked at the amount of gunk inside the fenders (none) foot peg rubber wear
(none) grit/damage under the skid plate (none) rear sprocket wear (none)and the most
incredible thing: the paint was NOT faded and still glossy. No pitting on the
wheel rims, no chain lube on the inside of the chain guard. TONS of compression,
I'm not going to even bother measuring it. Oh, yeah, there's also ALL the funky
factory stickers Honda pasted on just about every surface - there must be at
least half a dozen.

Someone, please pinch me and wake me up.

Now in the garage getting some cosmetic detailing and replacement of a few
missing things like a rear reflector and down tube cover. I'm going to do a
complete mechanical check and carb rebuild. Luckily Honda still has OEM
replacements available.

Then, I've got to finish breaking it in since Honda says 600 miles before firewall foreward.

Thanks Larry, but... I may have created a monster...

The wife says it's "cute". She has NEVER expressed an interest in her own motorcycle and wants to ride it since she can easily flat foot it. I believe it has been adopted.

When I told her it would probably only go about 25 mph up a hill she said that was "OK".

This, from a woman I've been married to for 17 years that has never had an accident or ticket in her LIFE - parking or otherwise - and genuinely would not know what to do if she was pulled over by a cop. I guess opposites DO attract!

How can I refuse not making it "her" bike?

Nice find... You obviously have too much time on your hands, sitting around reading Classified Ads!

Actually, I think the manual says 600 miles, or THIRTY years; whichever occurs first! You're safe by 10 years.

This could be an expensive experiment. She starts with the Honda 90 and before you know it, she has her eye on a new GT....

My new Copper Wing is done!

Get it? Gold Wing, Silver Wing.... um - never mind.

It's my new "around town" touring bike. The aluminum Zero (Halliburton) night vision binocular case fits like it was made for the rack. It's water tight and even has a pressure relief valve. I fabricated the tie down straps from 1" webbing and mil spec snap buckles. With 2000 lb.s of hold down force it taint' goin' nowhere. $20.00 from military surplus in LA.

Top speed with 221 lbs. of lard on board is just a tad over 40, but with the low range gearbox engaged it will climb a 30 degree hill in second gear! 85 mpg. 2.6 gallons in the main plus .5 in the the spare tank means I should be good for well over 200 miles before pulling over for fuel and a rest.

I've been told by the CT 90 expurts (3100 of em') that there is one other in the US that is as nice as this one.

Can't wait to go to our local bike night and hang out with all my chromosexual Harley friends. They better not laugh at me since my UZI fits perfectly in the top case.

Enjoy!

Great find !
I know the feeling, 10 years ago I came across a 36 Harley VLH original condition. Swapped a pair of tractor tires for a old oliver and ran. The tires cost me $200. The bike needed a motor and trans rebuild plus I found a NOS wire harness $ 500 , well worth it.

Great Trail 90, Ron! Ah the memories... while I learned to ride on a blue Trail 70 when I was 11, your bike reminds me of Suzi & Wendy Gaston of Laramie, Wyoming. To my young mind they were super hot biker chicks! They were 17 & 19.

Good luck with your newly created monster. I'll be interested in her next selection as she progresses to more power.

Blessed be the barn find! They really do exist.

You are scaring me with that thing, though -- it was one of the more serious lust objects of my ill-spent childhood! And yours looks like the day it rolled off the line -- like time has been effectively frozen.

Which would make me 11 years old today. =8-o

For your consideration, I'll attach my own barn find. Admittedly, it was not in the same state of preservation as yours, but after much laying on of hands,it is as good -- if not as pretty -- a motorcycle as yours. ;-)

This one came out of barn in point of rocks, maryland -- actual barn! actual cows! -- for $1100. Another bear eaten!

Mine's a 69 with 2900 mi. Top speed with 218 lbs of blubber atop is 46 mph on flat surface, cool day, 400 ft elev., and with a 3 mph wind at my back. Let's throw down--I think I can take you.
