Re: rock

I caught a small bird once on my chest while riding the K12RS. It fell dazed on my tankbag; while I was gingerly slowing down, it woke up and flew away.

That was a minor affair. However, a couple of weeks ago on an Interstate, my wife was hit in her car by what seemed to be a ceramic tile, thrown up by the vehicle ahead. She said the bang was deafening; the tile ground swirl marks as it traveled up the glass. There is a big crack growing now, this week I'll have to order a new windshield for the Audi.

I shudder to think about what could happen if such thing hit a rider. Full helmet's chin bar could have possibly prevented the tile from entering inside, but the impact could be disastrous. And in an open-face helmet... wow.

Re: rock

Rock came off an oncoming dump truck and hit my helmet. Put a chip in the helmet, I no longer own. Hate to think how much that would've hurt.

Re: rock

In my Harley days, had a piece of plywood thrown up by a semi. It managed to come behind the windshield and hit me in the chest. Dang thing darn near knocked me off the bike. Left a bruise that remained for two weeks.

Re: rock

Driving a downtown expressway a few years ago, happy as a pig, when a terribly load bang left a 2" dia hole om the right hand side of my car's windshield and shattered the front passenger side window. I never saw a thing nor knew what it was, but I guess it was the lug off the front wheel of a truck.

I don't think I would have survived that had it hit my helmet visor.

I am sure John Fisher will chime in. Marilyn, on the way to CCR as a pillion, took a pheasant in the face with a flip up helmet (it was down) and it knock her out (she was looking off to the side and did not see it coming). She survived but was very purple for a several days.

+1 on full face. Call me paranoid. Only strike was bird to arm, narrowly missing my helmet.

Re: rock

Sitting first at stoplight at intersection. Wearing an open face helmet with shield down. HJC something or other with hinged shield. Dump truck passes thru intersection, grazes something on raodway with edge of tire (?), throws it at me, hits me right on shield at my nose. Item falls to my lap as light turns green, so I get on with and when I stop again, I look to seewhat it was. Some Kind of large (4") steel flange, about 1/16" thick, folded in half (runover repeatedly?). My lesson to always have shield down as far as possible and still breathe. It knocked my head back and sounded like an explosion in the helmet. Would've likely broken my nose or worse had I not had my shield down. Made a huge place on shield.

Things get thrown up/off all the time, I would say. Just have to have proper protection in place when it happens. Might want to check helmet carefully or have it checked for cracks or hidden damage. Helmet is only made to "work" once.

Re: rock

I took a chunk of semi-trailer tire tread to the face a couple years ago. Was never so happy to have worn a full-face helmet than that. Left tire tread marks on the top of the helmet.

That and getting caught in a hail storm with no way to turn off the highway convinced me that full-face helmets are the way to go.

Re: rock

I was riding on my LT between two small local towns on a state highway, when I noticed a state cop had slipped up behind me. When out of the ditch a pheasant flew up, hit my windscreen and went back and hit the cops windshield, shattering it. Cop pulls me over and gives me a ticket. I ask what for? He says for flipping him the bird! tada!

WHY does it always seem like the next overpass is 100 miles a way?

Re: rock

Brand new Shoei, first time out riding with it, I was nailed in the face on way home from work that nearly knocked me off bike. When I looked in mirror there were feathers sticking out from the edge of the visor. Somehow it got in between my windshield and me at 65. My neck hurt for a week.
I have been lucky and not been hit by a rock in the face, I have caught a few on the shin. OUCH! huge welts. I have been wearing high boots for while now with lots of hard plastic protection. I don't care what you ride or how cool you think you are, you are exposed on a bike and little things can do big damage at speed.
