Buy 2nd hand bikes in US, ride, then export... qu's

So, some questions for a guy on another site....

1. Buying bikes unseen in US (2 actually, already done in NJ and Maryland), transported to WI for pickup at airport on arrival (don't ask!).
2. Riding then for 2-3 weeks to LA.
3. Exporting from LA to NZ.

Now, we have the LA to NZ part covered OK, so the real the question is:

They have the bill of sale, but no plates on the bikes. How do they get: plates, insurance and registration? The guys are visitors and only have a hotel as an address. Not buying from a dealer, its private.

They want to ride legally - I am assuming the bill of sale will be enough for ownership for a foreigner.

Any advice from those who have done it?

TIA.

I would be more than happy to help you in your tours with bike purchases, I am a used truck dealer in Oklahoma and I have helped a few people do what you are asking.
Here is how I handle a bike purchase like this.

1. I purchase the bike for you ahead of time, since I am a dealer I do not have to tag the bike, I might have to roll a out of state title to my dealerships name but that only costs $15.00 (while the bike is in my possession my dealers insurance covers the bike)

2. I hold the bike and title for you until you need the bikes, I then tag the bike ($125.00) when you get here to take your ride we fill the title out in your name, you have a current tag, a current bill of sale . The only thing you will need is Insurance....you can use my address and purchase a policy in your name and use my address......When you leave the US and ship your bike home apply for a refund on the insurance policy.

I did this for A German Couple, purchased 2 Harley's for them, charged them $500.00 per bike plus expenses, Met them in NC with their bikes, They had a lot of fun, I got to meet some fellow riders, and everyone was happy.

Would be happy to do the same for you.

It was really funny, when Hans sent me the money to buy his bikes a lot of his friends thought he was crazy..........i.e. trusting someone he did not know, He checked me out on the internet and decided he felt comfortable with the transaction. He wired the money before I bought the bikes as we had been discussing going to a dealer only auction and he could view the bikes online before and during the sale he felt comfortable sending me a wire for $45,000.........it does seem like a leap of faith but it all worked out.......

here is a link to my smugmug account: http://kieth.smugmug.com/

and a link showing the bikes I purchased for Hans and his family:

Send me a e mail and if i can remember it will try to find my skype # and we can talk.

I will try and find Hans's e mail and phone number so you can check me out. Kieth

Thanks Kieth... unfortunately the bikes are purchased already, I think its been done with a little too much zeal and not a lot of forethought.

Terrific offer though and typical of the sort of assistance offered on this site.

I think the main issue is getting the tags. How can they get them in a given state if they have no residence? Once they have tags, the insurance is OK to get.

They arrive into Milwaukee, the bikes are nearby, in storage, with no plates. They have ownership papers only and a hotel address, no residencey. How will this play out? How do they get tags/plates? Do they have to pay the local tax on their purchase even though it was in another state?

TIA.

Can the bikes be registered and tagged in New Zealand with the paperwork but without a physical exam?
