dumb question from So Cal

What is the difference between black ice and regular ice. No racial jokes, please. I live in So. Cal. There is some ice this time of year, I can usually tell where it is, so I do ride year-round.

Don't feel confused, and there are no 'dumb questions'.........That said, it is with some degree of experience I may address this question.........

"regular ice", Is usually either left from melted snow, or any other event, but is actually visible from the saddle..........it might not be easy to spot but one is able to 'see' it.......

"black ice" is a spawn of the Devil it's self........it can be caused by freezing fog, or freezing drizzle, or freezing light rain, but it flows into the road surface, floating over the chip seal then freezing..........Very difficult to see, if not impossible to see...........until, that is, you are totally sliding side ways watching pieces flying off your bike getting into a whole new relationship with what ever deity you suddenly find yourself paying homage to.

Usually the road surface has held a bit of solar heat so the moisture does not freeze right away, aggravating the situation greatly..............

You may not see this event in Southern Cal. and I pray you will never experience it.........but it's a good thing to know about................

B-SAFE out there.................

My take differs slightly ....

Regular ice that is Snow melt, Frost or other water sources freezing having a white or air filled appearance NOT being clear and easily seen upon a road surface by it frosty white appearance.

Black Ice is water what freezes perfectly clear and transparent having the color of the asphalt look as if it is the actual surface ( Thus why named this )
Black ice by name can be clear frozen water upon any surface that at casual observation appears to be the actual surface on which your seeing NOT being able to see the ice covering unless closely inspected. Or ridden over first and then WTF inspected after the fact.

In my opinion Motorhead has it nailed. "Regular Ice" is very obvious in appearance while the "Black Ice" can look like a wet road or be completely invisible do to wet conditions. In my home land of Maine this is true on wet mornings, while the road in the sun may wet then you enter some shade the wet may be frozen and you do not know until your sliding....

Re: dumb question from So Cal

Thanks for the input. I am not sensitive, and just trying to be funny with the racial comment. That being said, the only time I went down while riding was while leaving my neighborhood on my k100. I hit the ice in the gutter at the entrance to my neighborhood. The mirror popped off and the side case hinge broke. Total damage about $1. Damage to pride, hard to say. It was <30f this morning, I rode carefully.

No, no, that's cheap ice!

Here is my definition: black ice - when you are instantly upside down in your car or sliding away from your bike, wondering what the f#*^ just happened on this perfectly clear road a fraction of second ago. Don't ask how I know.

I have heard of this exploding black ice--but I thought it was only urban legend!

I wish it was... Almost as quick and potent as an IED, but without the shrapnel. I wound up wheels-up in a ditch and learned a lesson about seatbelts (in days when most did not use them). Nobody got hurt while we bounced around - but I almost broke something when falling out of the seat once the buckle was released. Really amusing in retrospect.

On the other hand, when I got surprised on my bike, I did not know about protective gear yet. I thought that jeans and two pairs of skiing underwear were appropriate - he, he... Luckily, I kept sliding in my lane, free of oncoming traffic.

Aaaahh, black ice, the fun stuff.
