What to do with old helmets?

I was all set to hijack the thread "when do you replace your helmet" but figured a new thread would be more polite!

So............. What do you do with your "old" helmets? I still have a few on the shelf gathering dust but wonder if they might be put to better use? Maybe some sort of donation? Seems a waste that some people ride without them and maybe a bad helmet would be better than no helmet?

There is an organization that I recently donated some old, but good business suits to for disadvantaged, for job interviews. I had several just gathering dust and taking up space. Seems I only wear one favorite suit for weddings and funerals. Don't need the 4-5 ones gathering dust for business...

Maybe there is a way to re-use or recycle the old helmets in the garage?

Re: What to do with old helmets?

Dan, I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on television.
For liability reasons I would not donate my helmet to any organization or individual.
In the any reason to sue society that we live in I can just imagine someone breaking their finger, blaming the helmet and suing you.
All my old helmets go in the garbage.

What Gary says Dano. I wouldn't leave myself open.
You can start a line of hooks high up on the garage wall and look at all those helmets with good memories, or Just can em.

Re: What to do with old helmets?

I had a collection of old helmets, maybe 8 or 10, In my parts store.
I had a customer, a young fellow, who always wanted to talk about painting, custom painting, pin striping...
Any way he showed me he had some talent so I gave him the helmets to pratice on.

I have either sold the one's under 3 years old, pitched the one's older than 5 years old or were damaged. Could make flower pots ot of them.

contact the local MSF, if they provide riders with helmets for the basic motorcycling class, maybe they can use them

Re: What to do with old helmets?

I wouldn't worry about liability - especially if you give them away as long as the recipient understands they are used & when they were new. If they are eventually in an accident, they would have to find a snakebite lawyer willing to take the case on contingent liability basis knowing he'd have a hard time convincing any jury that new lids are so much more effective. Everyone knows motorcycles are dangerous.

But don't sell them.

How about M/C bars for rider pickups?

Re: What to do with old helmets?

A few years ago I left a helmet on a shelf in my garage during the cold winter and would just pop in and out to check the battery, etc, but since the garage was unheated I wouldn't spend much time there, just do a chore and run back into the house.

When it started to get warmer I went in and started to check everything and noticed a family of birds were living in the helmet having built a nest inside. So, Give those old helmets to the birds!

Take a saber saw (aka jig saw) and cut it in half...front to back along the center line. The side section view is a really great conversation piece.

Otherwise cut the retention straps off and put it in the garbage. No responsible motorcyclist should want to wear it..

I like that one Channing, a real practical use for them. I wonder if I could use them for piling caps on the boat dock?

Should work.. if your helmet is big enough... the only problem it would cause as I see, is slipping ropes off the posts.. On the other hand, the seagulls will find it a slippery slope.

I usually give them to the local MSF, no paperwork involved so I'm not sure how I'd be found liable for anything??

I crashed in this Arai so it seemed like a good idea to finish it off with a 44 Magnum. Funniest part is that I left it in the back of my pick up with the tailgate down and it rolled out some where in town

I give mine to the local EMS for training aids. They use them to show students how to safely remove them at accident sites.

Re: What to do with old helmets?

First thing I'd do is CUT OFF the buckle, so someone would be LESS likely to try to use it. Or maybe first, I'd call the local MSF site and see if they could use them. I'd love to have an old helmet cut in half at my site for the class part on helmets. In NC, we have a foundation that accepts things like that - maybe your state does too?

The local MSF may be able to use them for training helmets if not too old or worn...

Good luck.

Hmmmm...
I bet if you invert, add to a base it would make a good "set-up" for bar's. Could get a few beers/drinks and enough ice to keep chilled.. and modified so that it will remain "upside down" containing the contents.

Or, stack 'em to make a chair...
