What have you owned?

Hi all,
No riding in the Nor'east this week, (probably).
Reading Dave, from Las Vegas', reply post on "Don't just think about it", he listed past and current rides. It got me thinking how people started on different bikes according to how old they are.

I am 62, these are my past and current rides. Yours?

196? Vespa 160
1970 Triumph Trophy 500
1972 Triumph Trophy 650
1970 BSA Lightning 650
1970 Triumph Trophy 500 (second one)
198? Yamaha Seca 750, w/touring package
1975 Norton Commando **
1975 Norton Commando (second one)
1998 Triumph Trophy 1200
2003 Triumph Sprint ST
1972 Triumph Trophy 650 **
2007 BMW R1200RT **
2009 Kawasaki KLX250S **
1968 Norton Commando 750 **

The ** after the bikes are the ones I still have. I should have held on to all of them.

Mick

I forgot this one! Yamaha XT600

Re: What have you owned?

Hey Mick,

I do not remember exactly the years but I had all this bikes:

Honda 70cc Dax
Honda 250 XR
Yamaha 500 XT 81'
Suzuki DR 350
BMW Gs 100 92
BMW GS 1100 96"
BMW GS 1150 2002
Tiger 1050 ABS 2010 (sold on Oct10' is not a boxer, you know what I mean!)

For 2011 I will be very sure after next Wednesday when I test ride the RT and the Adventure. I do really want an RT but I am concerned about the leg room. Let's see what happen.
I will let you all know which one I get.

Take care

Marcelo

Re: What have you owned?

I always love these questions, just to see what others rode on their journey to BMW. For me, it included:

Honda Trail 90
Honda Nighthawk 450
Honda Shadow 500
Honda Nighthawk 650
Honda Nighthawk 750
Kawasaki Concours
Honda ST1300A

I know, a lot of Hondas. You find something you like, you stick with it, right? Wish I had rode a BMW a lot earlier. I always viewed them as too expensive, but a test ride solidified their value to me.

And now, my current rides are:

2009 1200RT
Suzuki DR-Z400

Happy New Year!

Re: What have you owned?

I'm 63 and here's my list. A lot of dirt bikes in there! I even tried to turn the CB 160 into a dirt bike with limited success. I still have the HD but come spring it will have to go. It was very good to me but with 145,000 miles I'll bet it won't bring much.

1964 Honda CB160
1970 Honda SL 175
1971 Honda SL 175
1972 Yamaha DT 250
1973 Bultaco Alpina
1974 Penton 125
1974 Honda MR 175
1975 Honda MR 175
1998 Honda Aero
2002 Harley Davidson
2009 BMW R1200RT

Re: What have you owned?

Hi guys - here it is. Complete list for the House of Trojan:

20" Schwin.
24" Schwin.
27" Schwin Racer 3 speed.
27" Raleigh Record 10 speed. (Rode this pup from Iowa City to Milwaukee once - a great adventure).
27" Trek road bike.
27" Trek hybrid.
1971 Yamaha 250 DT1-E Enduro
2008 Yamaha V-Star Silverado Classic 1100
2009 BMW R1200RT

And there you have it, from age 5 to my present stately age 57. V-Star, RT, and Trek hybrid remain in the stable. Note there was a little layoff between 1971 and 2008. Good to get back in the game.

Best, John

My 2007 RT had 5k on it when I got it. The first owner put a lot of accessories on it, the ones that worked perfectly for me were the handlebar back/risers, foot peg lowerers, aftermarket shifter and brake pedal. I have a 32 inch inseam and I usually have the suspension set near the lowest it can go and It is just right.

If you are tall, the seat can be raised a bit.

Re: What have you owned?

I do have 32 inch inseam too.
By adding the foot pegs does it prevent you from hitting your legs against the fairing in a quick stop?
That is my only concern, since I am coming from GSs I am not used to fairing around my legs. Honestly I really want an RT. But let see how I feel about that fairing.

Thanks for your input Mick.

Re: What have you owned?

My list is simular to many as I started riding in the late 60's and gradually went from a Honda 350 to a Honda 450 then to Harley's and now to my present BMW, a K1200LT.
Like most, I would buy a new one and then sell the old one, gradually moving up to what I thought was a better bike.

To digress just a little, last year, at my 40th high school reunion, I went to visit an early riding buddy from southern WV, who I hadnt seen in 40 years and he took me to the basement of his furniture store that had every bike he had ever owned since we rode together in the late 60's. Lined up in two rows, and I wish I had taken a picture, were at least 14 bikes, each with a sticker on the tank, noting the milage and last oil change date. They all had current license plates and were ready to ride.

He had mostly BMW's, but a few Triumps and Nortons. He said that he loved to buy motorcycles, but just couldn't stand to part with any of his kids!

Re: What have you owned?

Hi Mick and all---

By the way Mick, the annual classic bike auction is here in Vegas next weekend, also televised (I think) like the car auctions. I'll bet there is another Norton for you there just waiting! Maybe a Trumpet as well!

Matchless, 1960 G9----Terror of Groveland Square
Triumph, 1970 Trophy
BSA, 1970 650 Lightning (first new bike) and lost in a bad crash while racing it.
BSA, 1971 B50SS Thumper "Go ahead, make my day, try to start it!"
Yamaha, 1974 XS650 Twin
BMW, 1980 R100RT (see icon photo) kept for 22 years and nearly 200K miles
H-D, 2003 Wide Glide (attitude on wheels)
H-D, 2005 Road King (a great ride)
Triumph Scrambler, 2007, the most fun you can have on 2 wheels
BMW, 2010 R1200RT current ride and a keeper like the last one

I was up to a 3 bike garage, Beemer, Triumph, and H-D but several things forced a sale of the H-D and Triumph just recently----but that auction is right around the corner!

Ride safe!
Dave

2010 R1200 RT, Current Chariot
2007 Triumph Scrambler, Hoodlum
2005 H-D Road King, Trustworthy and fun
1980 R100 RT. Old friend of 22 years, all good
1971 BSA B50 SS, One lung funster
1970 BSA 650 Lightning, Alas, lost to a nasty crash

Re: What have you owned?

I wish I had photos of everything, but they are lost in the mist.
I really have to stay off e-bay and Search Tempest, I still have room in my shop for more stuff, so that could be dangerous.
The 68 Commando is a recent purchase, 20,000 miles on in need of a really good cleaning, but it seems mechanically sound and all the parts are there except for an air cleaner. Easy to find. The frame is the original from the factory, and has had a repair done to it by the last, (second) owner. I had a friend of mine weld in the tube added to the later frames to make sure it is OK. The original Commando frame got the nickname, "the widowmaker" for good reason.

I may take a real quick look at the auction.

I have not had any problems with my legs hitting the fairing on the RT, I have put about 22K miles on it.

Wink Re: What have you owned?

From memory so I may miss some:

1964 Honda 250 Scrambler (CL-72)
1968 Honda CB-350
1970 Kawasaki H-1 (500cc Triple 2 Stroke!)
1974 Norton Commando 850 (1st brand new Bike, bought sight unseen! No electric starter
and gearshift was on the right! Rear Brake on left. Awkward after my Jap Bikes!)
1973 Honda CB-500 Four
1971 Honda CB-750 K1 Four
1979 Triumph Bonneville 750 (bought as a basket case after a roadside fire!)
1980 Suzuki GS-850G (my 1st Drive-shaft Bike, & I loved it!)
1978 Yamaha XT-500E (strictly a fun Bike for my Kodiak Island days!)
1981 Yamaha XS-1100 (Standard model)
2000 BMW K1200LTC (my 1st BMW, & it is still mine! 117,000 miles plus)
1995 Triumph Tiger 900 (actually an 885cc Triple)

I believe that brings us up to speed. The years shown are not the years I necessarily owned and rode the Bikes, but rather, the year of the Bike's manufacture! I started riding around 1964, and have rarely been without two wheels since! There was the 13 months in Viet Nam, and about 3 years between the XS-1100 & the LT, but otherwise I have been riding two wheels all over the country!

Re: What have you owned?

A short list, not due to short term memory.

1970-1971 a 1966 Honda 50 Cadet (I wish I still had it.)
2000-2002 - a 1984 Honda Nighthawk 750
2002 - 2007 a 2002 BMW R1150RS
2007 - present a 2006 BMW R1200RT

Take care,

I got the herters in 72. All the bikes were bought used except for the yamaha 850 and the K12lt. I was without a bike for 7 years in the late 80's early 90's. Ex required me to sell it. That was how she became the ex. I should have made that decision before I sold the bike.
My brothers and I also had two Chaparral 80's in the mid 70's. Have never seen or heard of anyone else having one.

That's all I have ever needed or wanted. I have been riding almost daily for over 30 years. I ride them until they wear out. Instead of more bikes, I wish I had more time to go riding, especially longer trips.

Back in 1966 I had been married about a year and had a new baby and very little money. Then, here comes my neighbor with a brand new Honda 90. Of course I ask him to take me for a ride, which he did, and I was hooked. Immediately told the wife that I wanted a bike. Of course the answer was "NO WAY", we can't afford that. With that in mind, and being the responsible husband and father that I was, I ignored the response and went shopping. Went around to all the dealers in the area looking for a cheap used bike. The Yamaha dealer said I have just what your looking for. He took me into the back corner of his shop and showed me pile of bike parts and a large box containing a motor and transmission. Turns out some guy took the 180 apart trying to fix a transmission problem and couldn't put it back together, made some kind of deal on another bike and left the pile of parts behind. Dealer said, it's all there, just needs a new 2nd gear shifting fork and reassembly. He sold me the bike really cheap, threw in a new shifting fork and a Clymer manual and helped me load everything in the trunk of my car. I spent about a week putting everything back together and road that little 180 for about 2 years! And the rest as they say IS HISTORY!

Now 72 - started w a '67 Honda CB350, graduated to a '75 BMW R90/6, added a '77BMW R100/7, then a '84 Yamaha Virago, a 2000 BMW R1100RT, and a 2005 K1200LT. Still have the R1100RT, the K1200LT, and the R90/6. Funny how the K1200 makes all the others seem like small bikes............

They are smooth, quiet, powerful, comfortable, and versatile. I always wished I had bought a V65 instead of the V45 I owned. When the Magna finally began wearing out, I started my search looking for an exact replacement, but they (and their equivalents) were gone. The K1200GT that eventually replaced it (after 21 years) has made me very happy.

I am still wondering why Joe had so many of them. One was good enough for me; they were built very well overall.
