I muse tonight

Just got back home from an after work ride and arrived just after sunset. My thoughts went to why ride after dark. I ride to enjoy the panoramic view and enjoy the countryside I am in. After dark I see not much more than the ribbon of road I am on.

I understand commuting and using the scoot as a mode of transportation, but feel the pleasure comes from the view and having no need to be anyplace. Also at night the critters come out up here and I feel that could make a nice ride less enjoyable.

I have had the pleasure of putting 241,471 miles on this machine and the least enjoyable times have been at night.

I would appreciate any insight on this.

Just thoughts as I am relaxing at home with a cold beer in hand and the sun has set close to an hour ago.

The moon waxes after the first quarter.........after the setting sun, the scenery dwindles....the best of the best good lights fail to light what the human eye fails to comprehend.......wait for the fullness of the moon, then ...........rage, rage against the dying of the light......(Dylan Thomas, mayhaps)....

Re: I muse tonight

When I was much younger I used to love riding at night. No traffic, fewer cops, could really tear up the road.
Now that I am much older and wiser I have realized that at night, there are more drunks on the road and we are even more invisible to cars. This time of year it's dark when I leave for work in the morning and it is very noticeable that people just aren't awake when they are driving.
I drive in the dark only when necessary to get home or to where I am going.

A mid-winter's driving rain....in the cold moonless night along dark country roads....

THAT would make me muse as to why I failed......

to plan accordingly and stop at a decent overlook and pick a spot next to the fireplace as my bike rests under cover of the awning outside, a cold beer in my hand, I kick back and enjoy the pelting of raindrops above thinking of the next day's ride!

Re: I muse tonight

I love riding at night. The cooler, denser air makes the engine purr. The traffic is light to non-existent. The lack of scenery is a valid point, however, the time passes very quickly when it is just me, the machine, and the road.

The potential for deer does diminish the calmness just a bit though.

I have been riding 25 miles to work each morning at 0400 each day for the last 2 months in southern AL, and loving it.

The best ride I've had on the LT was 3 years ago when I left NC after dark and arrived in Cols, OH in the early AM in March. I practically had the WV turnpike to myself.

I'm sure the Iron Butters can add a lot more reasons.

Howdy

I avoid riding at night because:

1) Night vision isn't what it used to be.
2) Deer around eastern Kansas
3) Drunk drivers

Life is ephemeral. Don't waste it lookin up big words.

No Haiku, no Zen moment, I ride at night because that is the time I'm awake. 12 hour shifts X 3 per week. If I have 3 or more shifts off in a row then I convert sleepy times to a day shift schedule. I often have 4 or 5 days in a row off and can have up to 8 in a row off without taking vacation time. I definitely get some day riding in at these times.

Re: I muse tonight

I too only ride at night when the situation is necessary.

When I ride, I'm always surveying the road I'm on, intersecting roads, the sides and the scenery. For me, I'm not as connected to my riding at night. Maybe I'm just Old (and tired)

Re: I muse tonight

I ride frequently at night. This time of year I ride to work in the dark. In a few weeks (especially with the switch back to standard time) it will be dark for both halves of the commute.

Deer are a real concern here, and as someone just said it does diminish the fun-factor a little. When my wife is with me we each have our deer watch "assignments" - she is a good lookout, and frequently spots them off to the side of the road before I do because I'm concentrating elsewhere.

I like riding at night because the air is calmer - both because the sun is no longer heating things up, and because of reduced truck traffic. Same thing goes for early morning; everything is nice and calm, no buffeting. And, you can see some spectacular sunsets.

Re: I muse tonight

Interesting takes. I don;t like to ride or even drive as much after dark as I used to. Night vision is not as good as when I was younger. If I'm going after dark, I think I want interstate. Long stretches of easy road. That said, one of the more interesting rides I have done was leaving at midnight and riding up the slab to DC. Timing sucked - we hit morning rush hour, but hte night ride was fun in an adventuresome kind of way.

Heck I can't even find time to ride daylight anymore. The LT sits on charge waiting though....

Re: I muse tonight

My ride to & from work 4 months of the year is in the dark 60 miles round trip. I'm usually more awake riding at night & I prefer the interstates. I've rode on the Natchez Trace Parkway twice at night but never again.

Re: I muse tonight

Two salient points I omitted from my first response to this post:

It is always cooler when riding at night. Less important in February I know.

The sun is seldom(?) In your eyes at night. I HATE riding with the sun in my eyes!

BTW, the crabbing rocks! Plenty of them and they are hard as stone!

Re: I muse tonight

Well, I like riding at night. Just got back from a quick 50. The crops are mostly done now, so you can see for miles here in flatland. But one point not mentioned yet is that at night you aren't distracted as much by the scenery around you and its easier to concentrate down the road. I used to ride a lot at night when younger, but not so much now (married)

Re: I muse tonight

Age and wisdom can help one out-smart themselves. Yes, there are some dangers introduced with the lack of daylight. But it's just different riding at night. It's a different kind of pleasure, if you're smart about it. I love circling downtown Cleveland on it's freeway system just outside the city at night. I can easily steer way clear of the drunks, there's no deer so to speak, and there's just something about the sound of the motor at night.

I know you're wiser than I. But don't get too smart. Otherwise, you'll talk yourself into selling the bike altogether.
