US 441 in the Smokies - Heads up

I did a quick look around to see if this was already posted....my appologies if it has and I missed it.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATL. PARK (WATE-TV Knoxville) - A portion of U.S. 441 between Gatlinburg and Cherokee is closed due to a rockslide.
Park officials said the rockslide happened a little after 6 Saturday evening 8-21-10 about six miles north of Cherokee near the Collins Creek picnic area.
Officials are assessing the severity of the rockslide. There is no word when the road will reopen.

From Asheville Citzen-Times 8-23-10

WVLT-TV in Knoxville quoted park spokesman Bob Miller, who said the slide affects both lanes of the highway also known as Newfound Gap Road about six miles north of Cherokee, N.C. The rocks slid onto the highway on Sunday evening.

We went through there this past weekend and there was no blockage nor could I see where there was a slide. They must have cleaned it up.

There was a slide, but 441 is the only way from Gatlinburg to Cherokee (unless you drove many many miles around)!

With the Smokies being one of most-visited National Parks they aren't going to let a rockslide slow them down!
