Buying a Demo

Hi All,

New here and in the process of searching for my first BMW, currently riding a V-Strom 1000. I'm looking at purchasing a 2010 1200RT and would like to know what are the issues with purchasing a dealers demo bike. The $$$ savings are a plus but are their any negatives. I've done a couple of demo rides and have been respectful to the bike and the dealers property but are people going out and beating on these.

Thanks for the help,
T

Re: Buying a Demo

Some people might run them a little hard, but you still get the remainder of the factory warranty. Should be a good bit of time/mileage left, but you can always get the extended warranty anytime before the factory warranty runs out. Good luck finding your new RT!

If you are thinking about an extended warranty, keep in mind that some extended warranties will cover more if you buy it at the time you buy the bike. If you buy the extended warranty later, some items may be excluded. There are several companies selling extended warranties, so do your homework first.

Re: Buying a Demo

I almost bought a dealer demo K1200LT a few years back, but they were giving me a pretty crappy trade in price on my bike (K75RT) for a demo with 5000km on it.
Checked around a few other dealers and found one who had some left over "advertising cash" that were prepared to offer me a lot more for the trade on a NEW model from distributor, with basically same fittings.

If no-one else is prepared to sweeten the pot to get your business... then maybe its a good deal to you! Its your dime, as they say...

good luck!

Re: Buying a Demo

I just purchased a 2010 RT dealer demo. I took it for a test ride and had no qualms about making the purchase. The motorcycle appears to be flawless both cosmetically and mechanically. When I inquired about the warranty the dealership owner informed me demo models have a 39 month warranty that starts at the time the motorcycle is placed into the demo fleet. I have a full 36 months left on mine. I am very familiar with the dealership and know that most of the demo miles were done by dealership employees in order to attain minimum required mileage so the motorcycle could be sold.

Re: Buying a Demo

My first LT was a demo and was just like any other bike no more problems than any other. I'd do it again if given the opportunity.

Re: Buying a Demo

Thanks folks for the input, at least this opens up another option in addition to new or a used 2010 that someone just bought. It seems that BMW is not offering any specials on the RT these days.
