Ever been to Helen, GA

We're planning a trip to Helen, GA and surrounding area. If you've been, any suggestions for the area (restaurants, roads, sites, etc)? TIA

If you like a good ruben sandwich the International Cafe on the south east side of the river is hard to beat.

Re: Ever been to Helen, GA

Helen can be "tacky" but then again I grew up in the Atlanta area and have been there a lot. But it can also be a fun tacky too. When on a ride, Rider's Hill in Dahlonega can be a nice place to sit on the rocking chairs and watch motorcycles come and go. It's really not that far a ride from Helen. From there you can evean take Georgia 60 out to Georgia 515 in Blue Ridge and head on up to Murphy. The Richard B. Russell Parkway is now open again. Then there's also Wolfpen Gap Road (Highway 180) between Vogle State Park and Suches, GA. There really are just too many good roads in the area to name them all.

Not really by Helen but not that far away,
if you're a good eater check out the Dillard house, in Dillard GA
it's on 441 almost to the GA-NC border.
Family style excellent restaurant with a nice motel on the premises if you eat too much (and you will)

Go to north GA every year for the GA Mountain Rally in Hiawassee.

Hofer's German Bakery and Restaurant on the north end of town.

Delicious German pastries, excellent breakfast and lunch.
A must stop for us.

I'm told that you have to watch out for the local police in Helen, GA.

I assume that infers you have to watch out for them if you're doing something illegal... or do you just have to watch out for them all the time, regardless? just kidding.

Thanks for all the tips and the e-mailed routes! Really appreciate it. Gotta get away from the 100 degree heat we're gonna have. It's only gonna be in the 90's in the mountains, hehe.

As others have said, the Russell Highway northwest of Helen - one of my favorite roads. If you ride it from south to north, you'll be going uphill. Be sure to check the view at the overlooks on this lovely road.

Re: Ever been to Helen, GA

And for some local flavor (from ole Toad, a non-resident!), stop in at Wild Bill from Dawsonville's (Bill Elliott) cafe - in Dawsonville. Not positive it's still there, and the vittles aren't topshelf, butt much racing paraphernalia and a chance to get in outta the heat.

Also, from a non-resident, there is/wuz a pretty good chocolate/fudge shoppe in Dahlonega, GA, along with a 'gift' shoppe, 'Timber and Treasures,' nearby - both on the square, if memory serves. Used to be, you could pan for gold in the town 'crick' --- Dahlonega at one time wuz home to a branch of the US mint, where a gazillion gold coins were minted. That little town/village is worth a google or wiki-pedia search, as is Helen.

Have a great trip, Norwood. Get your UPS account freshened up!!!

Re: Ever been to Helen, GA

I used to live in Atlanta and have been there quite a few times. In my opinion.. the town is tacky. Maybe because I am German and they try too hard to be German A little like trying to visit the USA by going to Euro Disney

The area around it is a great riding area, and as others have said the only real German thing is the bakery. Also true, or at least used too: Lots of cops all around the area, not just in Helen.

You might be referring to the place that is actually where Dawsonville City Hall is. The food is mediocre at best I'd say. Instead, I'd recommend the Dawsonville Pool Room right off the square. There's some MAJOR stock car history there from way before NASCAR was formed.

The biggest thing they're looking for nowadays is passing on the double yellow line, which I think is not a bright idea anyway. Speeding will get you caught too, but not as quick as passing on the double yellow.
