Question Salvage Title K1200S

Hi All,

Thinking about buying a bike with a "salvage title", it is a 2007 K1200S - should I just run away? Are there too many gotcha's?

Don't be shy, tell me what you think.

If it check outs mechanically and you are planning on keeping it,go for it.
Probably salvaged due to tupperware damage. My '03 was totalled in '07 because of tupperware damage. I would ride it anywhere.

Re: Salvage Title K1200S

I just finished doing a K12S. It didn't need much, just a headlamp, mirror, turn sig and fairing mount.
I was suprised that there were very few used parts on the market.

Is there any problem with insurance?

The guy says that it is under an extended warranty, are they usually voided?

I think ALL warranties are null-void after a vehicle is changed to "surplus" title.

So, you may be able to get a "refund" from that ...but they won't fix it.

How bad is it "broken"?

Re: Salvage Title K1200S

Not broken at all, the guy replaced the broken plastic and had it repainted looks very good. Haven't riden it though.

It's on ebay, near Houston. Thinking about riding down there to look at it in person before I bid on it.

Re: Salvage Title K1200S

What kind of crash was it involved in? Frontal? Just "laid it down"? Did it stop suddenly or did it slide to a stop?

Each type causes different damage. Subframes could be slightly bent which is hard to tell from a picture. This might be serious or just a PITA each time you try to reinstall tupperware. The forks could have a slight tweak to them that may not be detected until you start wondering why you're going through so many seals or why it's always pulling to the right (left). There can be hidden damage to other components and body parts.

Unless you know of the bike personally, an inperson inspection would be best. I would say bid like it's still broken and don't be disappointed if you don't get it.

Oh yeah, have the repairs been approved by the proper authority so it can be licensed?

Re: Salvage Title K1200S

Bo I have picked up a few K1200s that have been hit in the front hard enough to brake the Leading arm on the front suspension. I was talking to Mike at Lone Star about the last one (I was thinking of buying it) & he said that was about the only thing he would be afraid to try to fix as it usually also bends the frame. If it was just laid down the the bike "SHOULD" be solid. As for the salvage title check with you insurance company to make sure they will cover it. Buying & selling a salvage bike is not a big deal.
