How not to spend a day riding

Was out for a ride on the Ducati today, hit some sand and in the course of recovering from a near low side, I did a 180 degree stoppie (yes, I flipped the bike end over end), which put me over the handlebars. Luckily I got to the ground first and broke the Ducati's fall (I do love my bikes). An ambulance ride and 4 hours at the ER later, I have a couple of fractured ribs and a separate right shoulder, a small abrasion on my forehead, and a few other aches and pains. Full riding gear and helmet, and I proved once again why we need to wear it all the time.

The really weird part is that all of the damage to the bike is in the top 6 inches of it's height; it truly flipped completely over and landed upside down (on me mostly), The windscreen is broken, the switchgear on the handlbars is smashed, and the tail rack is bent in a curve down to almost touching the underseat exhaust. The rest of the bike is perfectly fine, except for a couple of small scratches on the nose and side panel from when I pushed it off of me and onto the road.

Re: How not to spend a day riding

David,
I am glad your still with us and able to type. Its a good thing you were not on your GT. That big ole girl might have done more damage landing on you. I hope you recover very quickly. I think you Norcal guys have just a little to much fun on your motorcycles. Us Norwetters have a little less fun but we arrive in one piece!

Ouch David! Hope you heal up soon buddy. Just imagine the rash you would have had on top of everything else if you weren't an ATGATT kind of rider!

Re: How not to spend a day riding

Glad you're ok, Dave, and that the bike didn't seriously injure you.

Glad you had your gear on. Sand, grease or oil can happen any time, anywhere. You might not even see it 'til you're sliding.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery and a quickly repaired bike.

Here's to healing, David! You'll be pretty sore for a spell (DAMHIK), but sounds like you'll be back riding again soon!

I'm thankful you're still with us!

Damm David! Glad your still with us. Sounds like a low side would have been a little easier on the body.
May your ribs heal quickly but give them at least 6 full weeks of rest.

Well, it does obscure the brake light almost completely, and it would be hard to re-mount the tail bag that goes on there. It was dangling from the retaining straps after it was all said and done. But hey, who needs to know I'm stopping anyway!?!

Bummer David, I FEEL your pain.
Welcome to the Endo Equals Broken Ribs Club.
Glad you are reasonably OK.
I would have loved an ambulance ride, aren't you glad you put on clean socks.
After my Baja endo and 3 broken ribs the pain meds were the ticket for the first couple weeks, after about a month things should start to firm up and at 6 weeks I could sneeze again.

I would have loved an ambulance ride, aren't you glad you put on clean socks.
After my Baja endo and 3 broken ribs the pain meds were the ticket for the first couple weeks, after about a month things should start to firm up and at 6 weeks I could sneeze again.

Yes, I guess we have a couple of parallels on this one. The socks were fine, but after they started cutting my jeans off I was really glad I put on clean underwear!

Re: How not to spend a day riding

So, When you bought Raffy's Duc, Was wrecking it part of the agreement since he was going to be unable to ? (Now you guys know I'm just joshin' ya...)

Sorry to hear you're banged up but glad you're going to be ok. We were looking forward to seeing you at RR...

You know that's not that much damage for what the bike and you apparently went thru...

You both must be pretty tough....

I think lucky might be a better description on both our accounts. I hate to miss Red River, I was really looking forward to going. Maybe next year.

What a bummer David. During the prime riding season too. I bought this level II body armor mainly for riding at night because of the close calls I've had with deer. It's so comfortable I now never ride without it.

Dave, Glad the accident wasn't any worse and that you are healing. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Any damage to your helmet? Pictures?

I'm just curious because now that it's summer in Florida and I always wear one, I've occasionally worn my 1/2 instead of the full face. Everything I read says that about 1/3 of the head damage would be protected by a full face instead of what I prefer in the summer..

Any anecdotal thoughts?

My head and should were the first thing to make contact with the ground. The right side of the helmet and face shield were scratched up pretty well, and the mechanism that holds the face shield on was smashed to bits. If I had not had a full face on (1/2 or 3/4 instead) the right side of my face would have been the first thing to contact the ground, and I'm positive I would be dealing with some very serious head injuries at this point, likely including a broken jaw and some nasty road rash on my face.

So, if you like the front 1/3 of your head...

He asked for my thoughts, I gave an honest answer.

It will be good to see you in Cambria as well. Joe has volunteered to be my driver for the weekend since I won't be able to drive a car that long. You can start the "Miss Daisy" jokes now if you want.

After looking at the pictures Dave I feel compelled to ask, "Are the deer starting to return fire?"

Nope, the only varmints around were some local humans out for a walk. This was the result of a very sandy blind corner that aught me off guard.
