I Finally Got Wet

A week and a half ago on 12-30-09 I rode all day from Eupora Mississippi to Hammond Louisiana. When I left a little after daylight it was raining & in the mid 30s F. I put on my cold wet weather gear I've had for about thirty years. About mid afternoon I started to feel wet in the crotch. When I got to Hammond a little after dark I was soaked all the way down to my knees.

I just finished waterproofing the leather & found a split seam. I always carry two complete sets of gear when I ride on trips this time of year. It took almost a week to get it dry after I got home. I just wanted to give a heads up on inspecting your gear now & then. Something I failed to do. I hope I can have it repaired but it might just be to old.

I'm glad you posted pictures, while I was reading your post, I was thinking it may have been an "inside job"

Leather looks "good".. prob. just a rotten set of threads.. I'd take it to a "shoe repair" place.. they can sew it up for you.. I'd ask them to put another layer on top to further spread the load on the tight spot.

Good luck!

I like the idea of a layer on top that way the whole lining wouldn't have to be removed. One of our vendors just down the road from our shop makes custom covers for cars, tool boxes, pit carts & many other things. As much work that our company gives them they take care of our employes pretty good.

The matching leather jacket that came with the leather bibs doesn't fit me anymore plus the liner & elbows are pretty much wore out. I think I'll just cut the jacket up and save the good matching pieces for patches. The bibs are just to easy to put on,warm & comfortable to not fix them.

I believe what's being described here is a "codpiece." Now that's "retro!"

Take care,

Dave.. take the jacket to the leather folks... I'm guessing they can use the leather to make a "matching" piece...

Re: I Finally Got Wet

How about Frog Togs or similar over and just rely on the leather for abrasion protection.
The extra layer provides added warmth.
I've been using a 2 piece vinyl Tour Master rain suit I got at a Honda shop for $70 in 03 and no leaks yet.
Thanks for the reminder tho as I expect mine to fall apart the next time I want to use it.
Glad your EQUIPMENT dried out.

Any opinions out there as to what rainsuit seems to be the best by today standards?????
