DMV fees

Got a lovely surprise in the mail today when I opened 3 registration renewals for bike plates coming due. I knew they would go up as my daughter's Jeep plates went from 78.00 to $99.00. A nice 27% jump.(Don't worry, there is no threat of inflation....the government told us so). My bike plates went from $18.00 per year to $39.00...that is a 117% jump.

The extra $21.00 isn't going to kill the early retirement plan but what the F---. How can they just double up fees like that in one year?

I keep some bikes in Southern California but plate them here in Illinois cause I know it is cheaper. Curious what other states charge to renew a bike plate?

Re: DMV fees

Just renewed my 2000LT for $119.00 in CA. I don't remember, off hand, if or how much that went up from last year. There is also the "use" tax I paid when I bought the bike used which amounts to sales tax. And that is after the original owner had paid sales tax on the new bike...

Re: DMV fees

Ron, I felt the same way when I opened the the mail tonight and saw the SOB's had raised it 25% this year. Especially after turning off Golf Rd. onto Wilke and passing the "Rough Road" sign they put up instead of fixing the roads this summer.

Re: DMV fees

When I renewed the registration on my Suzuki C50T last year, it was $120.00. The initial registration and title fee for my 2003 R1150RTP in October was $196.75. I think the title fee is about $20.00. With any luck, Nevada will not raise the fees this year.

Re: DMV fees

I'm looking at my 145.98 bill for my 2006 K1200S with near 70k miles on it, due like next week, for tags in AZ. We sure got sticker shock coming from MI, plates were dirt cheap there.

Still, there are other areas that are cheeper, just bought a used jeep from a private party and there is no sales tax if you do that within the state, never saw that anywhere before.

I'll guess I'll quit my moaning about the 43 dollars I just paid to renew registration for my LT in Texas.

California registration taxes- unbelievable. Crooks.

Re: DMV fees

I think the reason the registration is so high in California (Note: North Dakota ) is directly related to the amount of riding time... As I figure it, I paid $79 and can ride almost 12 months of the year. Where as in ND, what 2-3months.....

Not sure why (other than the declared value) which was low (thank you Scott H.) the variations on the price...Now my 03 GMC was $238..And its considered a Commercial Vehicle , go figure!

Re: DMV fees

No value calc here in Illinois. Flat rate. I guess we do have it good that used bikes only pay a flat $25 tax at least we did. Have not bought one this year (yet) so I can't say for sure.

Illinois is lower then most. My gripe is the huge percentage increase.

Re: DMV fees

Just got the renewal for my wife's car in the mail. Her Honda costs $395.00 in the great state of CA! Up from $290.00 last year.

Next thing you know, at the DMV, just inside the door they'll have someone hiding so they can punch you in the face as you come in!

The extra $21.00 isn't going to kill the early retirement plan but what the F---. How can they just double up fees like that in one year?

Re: DMV fees

Florida - 12 months of mostly boring riding for $41 a year registration fees.....which is a 35% increase over last year. Bike insurance is also about 1/3 of what I was paying in CA. Glad you guys reminded me why I left. I could never have afforded my LT out there.

Re: DMV fees

Just opened my 2010 California DMV renewal for my 2007 KGT, an ungodly 269.00 which includes my personalized plate fee.

Calif upped the fees for 2010 to help close the budget gap, can't wait to see what my truck goes to.

Another @##$%^ tax disguised as "fee"

Re: DMV fees

No offense but I would never pay for a vanity plate...to me it seems like volunteering to pay extra taxes...never just on principle!

And after hearing about Quebec's moto riders getting bent over the bike (and no lube)...I guess I don't feel too bad about Illinois paltry little fee.
