List of Unique Cafes &/or Restaurants

I am trying to compile a list of small town restaurants, cafes, diners, and dives around the country so when people head out on an adventure they will have one nice easy-to-find location suggesting interesting places to eat along the way. These would be establishments that are unique, offer something different in either atmosphere for food, and no franchises. The list would be arranged by State, then by City, then by eatery.

I have a good list started now, but have seen others. Can anyone help locate other lists that might be incorporated/compiled.

Once I get this posted and linked, my idea is for people to us it, offer location suggestions, and offer updates on existing cafes on the list. Any help on locating existing listes would be greatly appreciated!

One must NOT forget Shirley's Soul Food in Toccoa, Georgia. Food is GREAT.
It'll put a little "soul" in ya'!

If you are in the Murphy, NC area, gotta stop at Herb's BBQ at the 4 MP on Hwy 64, some of the best ribs I have ever eaten.

Re: List of Unique Cafes &/or Restaurants

When in Tucson, a must try is the Estilo Sonora Hot Dog. It is a wonderful hot dog wrapped in Bacon then topped with whatever you want, beans, tomatoes, mustard, onions, and jalapeño salsa.
El Guero Canalo on 12th and Irvington is one of the best known and features the Sammy Dog(two dogs on one homemade bun.) BK's is just down the street and also very good. There are many stands on street corners that are just as good. I prefer one close to my home on Alvernon and Pima St. His jalapeño salsa is very good.

Order Guy Fieri's book - Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Dude has been to some off-the wall places around the country in his Camaro, and somehow manages to weigh less than a ton!!!

Re: List of Unique Cafes &/or Restaurants

In central Massachusetts
Hot Dog Annie's!
Lived down the street growing up and tried to get there every week. Really yummy hot dogs!

And a testimonial (BTW, they don't serve beer! )

Riding on the back of a Harley is one way to get your appetite going...especially on a hot summer day. You drive down the back roads behind Worcester Airport and you know you aren't in the city any longer. Fields and forests line this road to Hot Dog Annie's.

We pulled into the dirt parking lot and got off the bike. As usual..no matter what time it is, there's always a line here. My mouth started watering as we got closer to the ordering window. The building is old and worn but then again...it's always looked like this no matter how long ago or how old I am..ssshhhhh. If they made it up to date and brand new it wouldn't be Annie's. We like it this way. We ordered up 6 dogs and soda and sat down outside to eat in in the dusk of the day. Perfect setting, perfect dogs and perfect way to end a perfect riding day.

Re: List of Unique Cafes &/or Restaurants

After joining the long distance riders group at Pinks last year, I compiled my own list of "adventure restaurants" in the Los Angeles area for my family to try. I can't swear that they have the best food, but they are famous old time places with a high reputation from the locals.

In 'n' Out Burgers would have been on the list too, but they have grown into a huge chain here in the west.

See attached.

My wife and I watch his Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives TV show, he sure uncovers some interesting joints, with really great food. His book would probably be a good reference, but needs to be updated yearly!

Sounds like a neat plan. Feel free to grab any of the data from my site that strikes your fancy. You should be able to find a format at http://ridetoeat.com/rte/downloads that is easy to use.

Once you have your list up let me know and we can exchange links.

I'd be grateful if you would visit http://ridetoeat.com/rte/add/ and put some of those in... we have a big hole in the Black Hills. Only one entry in all of SD!

Red Mountian Cafe in Las Cruces, NM, near the I-25 & I-70 interchange, awesome food, cool little place, I think they have wine tasting nights, goes great with that gourmet food they serve that is real reasonable (about 20 bucks for dinner)

Re: List of Unique Cafes &/or Restaurants

If for some reason you find yourself in the middle of the desert on I-15 in California stop in at The Mad Greek's Diner in Baker, CA. It has been there forever and they make great Giro sandwiches along with other good Greek food. A friend and I take my Jeep and his Taco across the Mojave desert every year and stop there when we can.
