Great to know that Kommyfornia has competition! Funny, all the "levies" / fees and we STILL can't balance a budget!

Let's talk apples-to-apples (kiwi fruit to kiwi fruit?)

I was riding in Quebec last weekend and at a picture stop I struck conversation with a QC-tagged RT rider. He told me that his bike, classified as touring, costs some $700 Canadian to register - however, had he a sportbike, it would have been $1500.

Before you start yeehawing anf whoooping, however, consider this: how much did he pay for health insurance? My guess is: not $10,000 per family member.

So, do not go crazy: maybe sharing costs is not 100% fair to motorcyclists, but the general idea appeals to me.

Now, lets talk apples and oranges: Photographer_nz: what is your health insurance cost?

And, jayjacobson, what is yours? My guess, it costs hell of a lot more than in NZ (even if paid by an employer - still, your income).

I pay less than $100 US to register a bike in NJ. Would I mind paying $1000 if my health coverage cost halved? No.

So now we're comparing health insurance costs to vehicle registration fees?
Speaking of apples and oranges! . Well, thanks to the ever more and more spending worthless hacks, they BOTH are way to high! AND taxation doesn't have to be an either/or proposition. If your vehicle registration is reasonable, that doesn't mean the worthless hacks should drive up your health insurance costs! But they do. Likewise, if your health insurance costs are low, it's NOT the perfect excuse to jack your registration fees! Sheesh......

And yes, my health insurance is OUTRAGEOUS! Factoring in all the cost-shifting (medicare, medicaid and illegals), litigiousness, and ridiculously burdensome over-regulation, I can't imagine how it's not $$MORE!

Yes! Now you finally understand. Even all the fraud and waste is STILL "free" as long as the "government" pays for it..... Aww, WTF, I'll even throw in a "FREE" killing/death center/board and all the sedatives Dr Death--er--Feelgood, needs!

Well, yes, I thought? The registration costs that Photographer_NZ wrote about are linked to injury coverage. This is from the document he linked:

"ACC has today released proposals for increases to ACC levies as part of its annual levy setting process.

"The proposals relate to three ACC levies: Work levy rates that provide cover for work-related personal injuries; earners’ levy rates that provide cover for non work-related personal injuries (e.g. at home or at sport); and motor vehicle rates that provide cover for personal injuries involving moving motor vehicles on public roads."

Should not we be talking about the total cost to user?

The registration cost thread would belong into a bike forum, I'd say. But, indeed, it's turning to much into political debate - partly my fault.

I'm stopping now. Over and out.

Well if your government works anything like ours, your "total costs" are between 10-100 times MORE then they should be because of their involvement!

Re: Dearer to Ride a Motorcycle in New Zealand !!!!

You often get what you pay for. I live in a state where taxes are considerably higher than the state next door. They have fewer services, crappier schools and lots of potholes. It is not "apples to oranges". There is a good reason people who gripe about California and states like it general stay there; after decades of investing in infrastructure and quality of life, they are great places to live! When the nation has a recession, such states run a deficit, big surprise. Only rightwingnuts with incredibly strong principles have the lack of good sense to move to the middle of nowhere states to enjoy the so-called freedoms they tout. Don't like to pay taxes? Fine, there is plenty of space in places with low taxes because no one wants to live there let alone try to make a living there.

Then how do you explain Kommyfornia? So much for your "apples to oranges, you get what you pay for," and "great place to live theories."

Duh? What are you talking about. California is a great place to live with wonderful people. I love visiting there and would like to move there when current family obligations allow me to do so.

Visiting is one thing, BUT, you try living and/or retiring here!.....DUH!

Oh, this just in: we all get the pleasure of paying ANOTHER 10% income tax to the state, effective Nov 1. Enjoy! But, of course, we get so many "services" for that measly 10% extra, let that be a lesson to me!
