Thumbs up Iron Butt Rally 2009 - Ken Made It!

Ken finished the 09 IBR with just a minute to spare! Ken rolled into IBR HQ at the Red Lion Hotel in WA. Pauline and I waited with Ken's wife (Dayle) at the finish area. It was going to be close for him because of the last 36 hours of trial and tribulation with his GT.

Ken called me on Tuesday to say the Avon tire he put on 24 hours earlier in , Santa Ana was half worn out by the time he got to Devil's Tower. We were just miles away at CCR and wished we could be of assistance but he had to make it his next checkpoint in Trent SD and still get his 6 hour rest bonus. He was going to line up a tire in Winnipeg before he rode across Canada to return. We left CCR early to be able to greet him in Spokane and attend the finisher’s banquet tonight.

I got a couple voicemails from Ken on Wednesday as we continued our tour of the Black Hills and made our way west. All seemed good with the rider and machine. We stopped for dinner in Gillette, WY and I retrieved our voicemails and found one from Ken. He said he had broken down at 6pm central time and his bike was "toast". We were crushed because he was doing so well to climb 30 places from leg 1 to leg 2 showing in 8th. He said his shifter linkage broke and he was going to borrow a VStrom from some good enthusiast in the small town in Canada where his GT was broke down in. I tried to call him but got no response.

We rode on to Billings MT Wednesday night with so many deer on the road it was frightening. They were everywhere! On both shoulders of I-90; yes it was like riding through a gauntlet of deer saying, "go ahead, and make my day". I was wondering what it must have been like for these riders being out there every night for 11 straight days with this threat. Sobering thoughts went through our heads. We shut off the iPod so we could concentrate. I turned on all my driving lights (PHID's are excellent for deer spotting). And then when we got checked into the hotel still no word from Ken. We got up in a few hours to get on the road and I took a chance and called him. He answered the phone and told me he worked for several more hours the night before and fixed the GT's shifter! We were ecstatic! We encouraged him on and he’d made it to Edmonton and Calgary before dropping south into the Idaho panhandle to Sandpoint for a bonus that opened at 05:00 am this morning. I talked to him at length as he explained his route possibilities. Not ever having been in a rally I marveled at his ability to route and re-route on the fly. He had both of his main GPS's working and a backup Nuvi too. He was making headway. He pulled off the road to fuel and noticed a rider or two going past. One he mentioned was Maura (FJR) from BC and another was Davo (Kaw I think). I signed off and caught a nap and called him after I spied his Spot location being off route on a forest service road. Amazingly he had cell service and we talked while he detoured around a highway closure (95) in Idaho. He said it looked like an accident ahead and riders were blocked from heading south to Sandpoint and to the finish in Spokane. As it turned out it was Davo who struck a deer and was airlifted to Spokane for medical treatment. It is unknown at this time what his condition is.

I talked to Ken after he got his bonus in Sandpoint and he was "flying" to the finish. However he was going to be close to being after the 07:00 deadline before "late" points start getting deducted off your total. We waited at the entrance to the hotel with Dayle and at 06:58 he rounded the corner and came up the driveway in true Ken Meese fashion. My cell phone clock clicked 06:59 as he got off his GT and went to the check-in table. Wow! His grin was ear-to-ear! His bike looks like he has ridden through the Amazon! He has over 108k on an '07GT. That is one lotta miles on such a new model of machine. I would say it is tested for sure.

Ken is in line now for scoring. The IBR staff will be tabulating the scores and the winner will be announced tonight at the banquet. I will try to get you the word as soon as I know it. Ken had a solid ride and he should have an excellent finish. It is so awesome he put on his engineering hat and went to work on the GT and never gave up on it. He is nothing but tenacious! Four rally wins this year and an invitation to the IBR. A finish and a medal opportunity awate the scoring. What a year ken has had.

Good job Ken!!! Can't wait to hear the stories. Nice bank angle (for a parking lot) in that first pic. Good luck with the scoring and have a safe ride home.

That is one fine rider there. Congrats on your solid finish Ken.

Thanks for the update Ernie. This post has put the biggest smile on my face.

Only thing to make it more awesome would be a 3rd place, or so by Ken.

I know he is thrilled to complete what appears to be one of his life goals/dreams.

Congrats again.

I am so happy for Ken now! I have been watching his progress like a hawk for the whole rally, and even with his trials and tribulations he made us proud for him. Fantastic rally. Now to see where he ends up in the ranking.

They just announced the results. Ken Meese took 9th place with 11,047 miles and 111,129 points, which is a superb finish for a "rookie". A rookie is a first-time Iron Butt Rally rider.

Ken,

Absolutely incredible. Right to the top ten on your first try. I've followed this event for over a decade and this was by far the most eventful rally ever. It was so much fun to follow your ride on the daily scribes and websites. Congratulations!
