First ride with the kid

Yesterday was one of those days that will stick in my memory for a long, long time. My step-son and I had a "daddy day". We both had a dentist appointment in the afternoon so mom took the other two kids to day care and I kept the youngest. As soon as the others left the house, I broke the news that I wanted to take him riding, but that the weather didn't look great. He made me so proud when he looked up at me and said, "its only a little rain!"

Well OK... time to gear up. He had a helmet, pants and gloves, but not a good riding jacket. Mom is as serious as I am about ATGATT so we drove to Morton's BMW and found a suitable jacket that he can share with his brother and will have room to grow. That handled, we went home to start our ride.

We started off slow and calm. I pulled over to ask if he wanted to try some twisties. I got an affirmitive answer so off we went for a good 45 minutes. We stopped for a break and some water. We called mom to give her an update and he again made me proud when he announced that instead of coming straight home, he wanted to find more "twisty roads."

When we got home for a quick lunch, he asked if we could go to the dentist on the bike. Ummmm... yeah! After that, we went to a kid's party on the bike where we met mom and the others. After the pool party, he wanted to gear up again and ride home with me.

It didn't rain a single drop the whole day.

He hasn't stopped talking about it. He wants to go again and again. He wants to be picked up from school on the bike, but figured out there isn't room for his siblings. He's hooked! I'm now officially the coolest step-dad in the world! Woo hoo!!!

Awesome story Cliffy!
I too, have had tons of fun riding (off road) with my son.
It's been a great experience for both of us and as it looks, the two of you as well.
I think you got him hooked.
Time flies and before you know it, he'll be asking for his own bike.
Have fun and be safe.

Now that's a good boy! Being raised right!

My daughter started riding with me when she was old enough to reach the pillion pegs. I had to peel her off the bike, she loved it so much.

She was ATGATT too - helmet was completed with her pink unicorn sticker.

You're terrible! Now, he'll be as obsessed and fanatical about riding 2 wheels as you are!

And the next thrill will be the day he gets his own bike and you take a father/son trip.

Great story. Keep it up. That's pretty much how it started with my son and look at him now....

Re: First ride with the kid

My daughter started riding pillion at the age of 10. She will be 15 in November, and has spent the last four years saving all her birthday and report card money for her first bike. I also remember that first ride she took, she was hooked from then on.

She absolutely loves riding, and is good for a 300-400 mile day. We have had many great days together on the bike. She loves to be picked from school on the bike as all the other kids get to see her suit up and leave on the bike.

I have a grandson--way to young yet--so, how old is your son? I would love to do the same with him when he gets old enough.

He turned 8 back in May. He is wearing me out trying to find a way to get more time on the bike. I wish I didn't have to work so much.

Thanks...sounds like his love is as deep as his dad's.
