R1150rtp

I just got a great deal on a used RTP. It has clear strobes, the siren and some red and blue lights. It is my understanding that this equipment is legal to have as long as the following are observed:

1. Don't use the strobes
2. Cover the red/blue lights
3. Don't use the siren

Can anyone confirm that this is correct, or point me in the right direction to where I can find out?

Thanks.

Re: R1150rtp

It varies from state to state, but running blue lights might be illegal. I know it is in California on a non LEO vehicle. Red lights may not be legal facing forward on the bike, I think red lights need to be rear facing. I would check with an LEO to find out what the requirements are to avoid any hassles.

But I would definitely keep the siren.

Re: R1150rtp

I have two friends with RTP's. They use them for bicycle races at major events and here is the reply they gave me......

"Depends on local codes. Some states even regulate amber strobes.
If in doubt (or in unfriendly terrain) I disconnect the siren and/or pull a fuse."

.....wouldn't it be cool to just throw on the siren and lights to speed up your daily commute?.....

Be very careful. In some jurisdictions it is illegal to possess certain emergency lights except for specified vehicles.

You might be better off simply obtaining different colored bezels for the lights or removing them altogether.

Re: R1150rtp

In Texas you must be a "LEO" to have any light & siren on your bike.

Re: R1150rtp

Well , I don't know anything about the siren etc... But a friend of mine had a R100RT, that he cracked up . He got some used fairing parts tho replace the broken ones . One of them had a big sheriffs emblem on .

He road that bike all over the country , no problem . He road it up to Alaska with me in 1987 , no problem .

He got pulled over going to work , down by Detroit . They give his chose . Scrape off the sheriffs emblem , or go to jail .

Re: R1150rtp

Thanks for all the advice. I'm pretty sure that the only requirement is that the blue lights must be covered. But just to be on the safe side, I have replaced all of the blue lights with clear lenses. The two blue tail lights (non flashing) I replaced with red. There are no other police markings on the bike.

Now on a separate note...how the heck do I get the seat off this thing? Where is the secret release????

Open the trunk with the key, and there is a handle, near the seat side and pull. It should release. It is small medal handle in a u shape............

Thanks John. Missed that little handle the first 12 times I checked there...must be all those wires got in the way! One of these days, I'm gonna have to figure out what they all go to and get rid of the ones that go to removed equipment.

Regarding all the wires! Does anyone know where I could get a wiring diagram for my 2003 R1150RTP as there is quite a bit of extra wiring and some of it may be useful for things other than the original equipment. There are so many connectors which are not plugged into anything.
