Close encounter

I was riding back home from a friend in a wooden area of Raleigh around 10:30pm when 4 deers decided to cross the road at about be 15/20 yards in front of me. Few minutes before that happened I was riding around 55mph but then thought "I am going too fast, this is a perfect deer situation" and decided to slow down to around 35mph. Also I am glad I put additional lighting on my bike that light up the side of the road because that is how I saw them just before they started crossing and that gave me time to slow down to almost stopping. I almost hit the last one that was crossing. With the stock light only I am pretty sure I would not have been able to see them on time. Appropriate speed and good lighting saved me there.
Deers are really a plague over here. I used to ride in very wooden areas back in France for many years but I was never as concerned about deers as over here. They are everywhere. May be we should reintroduce mountain lions in North Carolina

Or wolves - their packs are more efficient with deer than pumas, and are more flexible for habitat.

Daily occurrence here. Danger time was dusk to dawn, now it's any time. I had three cross me at 3:00 in the afternoon. Now it's just not deer, I think we have more turkeys than squirrels here...........Still love this dumb sport!!!!

Re: Close encounter

Returning from Memphis recently, a turkey buzzard (I think) dove off an overpass, swoopped down to eye level and flew right next to me for about 20 yards. We were looking right at each other for a couple of seconds. It was kinda cool. Like those IMAX films about geese.

Re: Close encounter

Same problem here at dusk with one difference. In addition to the deer, you have to watch for the ELK. Returning from a trip to Telluride, CO last summer, decided to go straight through to Seattle. About 2 AM going over Chinook Pass into Mt. Rainier National Park, there were elk on the highway around every bend in the road. Of course, I'm sure they were looking at me thinking WTF, this is OUR road at this time in the morning. And, you know what? They were right!

Life happens...you control your reaction.

You're riding along and a deer crosses the road in front of your bike (whew!). An instant later, just when you think it's safe, a pack of wolves slams into you.
