Thumbs up Howard Has Some New Wheels!

I met Howard and his family this afternoon in Columbus (OH) for a street festival and a Euro Bike Nite event.
Those that enjoyed CCR Tan Tara surely remember Katy his daughter. She is enjoying some homemade ice cream and Howard is taller than ever!

After 45 seconds of instruction and a check of the Segway manual to see if the BMW gear was approved, he was on his way.

Ride on Howard!

Re: Howard Has Some New Wheels!

It was good to see you again, Paul. Thanks for taking the photos.

We've seen Segways in use in cities and airports but I never even came close to having a chance to ride one until today. That was very, very cool, and it took about 30 seconds to get comfortable on it. The company that provided the Segways does tours of downtown Columbus and nearby neighborhoods. What a great way to hook people into their tours.

Someone on this site has a tag line of "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul". This still qualifies as "two wheels"... right?

I almost - ALMOST - lost it when I went into a really tight left-hand turn too hot. Scared the crap out of me; I couldn't stop thinking about the carnage that would have resulted if I had high-sided on that beast.

But seriously, a good 30 seconds and it seems very natural. I'd like to have taken it out on the street to see what the top speed of 12.5 mph (yes, really) seems like. They had it governed to 7 mph for their demo rides in a small parking lot.

Turning left or right is accomplished by pushing the handlebar unit-thingy left or right. Forward/backward movement is accomplished simply by leaning in the desired direction.

Lots of cities are starting that. I saw a group out in downtown the last time I had to work in the nation's capitol.

Re: Howard Has Some New Wheels!

I'm seriously contemplating taking up backpacking. I saw a Segway at the local Best Buy store last weekend sporting knobby tires and a sign that indicated it was for off road use. It has a range of 17 miles so I figure I'm good for 7 miles in, 7 miles back out and 3 miles of reserve power. The price was $5850 dollars but probably worth it with all of the back packing exercise I would be getting.

I would need toi figure out a way to put the backpack directly on the Segway though in order to minimize potential back pain!!!
