Not the usual Color of Gasoline

Last week I stopped off at a BP gas station in Long beach California near the shipping docks. This was my first time ever using BP products….and almost had a panic attack.

As I was putting in gas I noticed it was a deep dark reddish brown. I’ve seen pink gas, yellowish gas and, mostly, clear gas. Never Deep Dark Reddish Brown. I though I was poring in Diesel at first. Yanked the nozzle out and got gas all over my tank. And noticed it smelled like and was connected to the gasoline pump and so was actually gasoline.

So I filled as usual and drove off. Notice immediately that the Wee was very quite and very smooth running. Well when I finally refueled over the weekend (with Shell 91 Octane – clear gasoline) I put in 4.6 gallons with the trip meter showing 277 miles.

Yup. I traveled 277 miles on 4.63 gallons. Which equates to 59.8 MPG. I drove off and after a couple of miles the old bike characterizes (Pre Brown gas) was back.

My question is:

1. What’s with the Brown gas?
2. Is it damaging?
3. Why did I got a smoother ride with better mileage.
4. What color should gas be anyway?
5. Where is Waldo?

Re: Not the usual Color of Gasoline

Gas stations and the fuel recipes are regulated by the State and Federal government. The pumps have filters to remove sediment from the fuel, but they don't remove water. That should be your only concern.

Re: Not the usual Color of Gasoline

Back in 1973 when I lived in Cleveland there was a chain of gas stations named Purple Martin (after the bird) or some such thing. I was filling up one day and commented to the attendant "Holy crap that gas is purple". Despite the ads that proclaimed the benefits of their proprietary fuel additives, the pump jockey just said, "Yeah they put some purple sh*t in it to make it that color." So much for advertising and colorful gas.

Re: Not the usual Color of Gasoline

This is what I was told in 1972 when I worked at a gas station in the Detroit area. All the fuel came thru the same pipeline from Houston Tx. They had clear glass that they would look thru & when there color of fuel could be seen that was for our brand of gas they would open the valve to fill the storage tanks.

It was color coded for the different brands of gas as well as octane. Belive it or not leaded, unleaded & diesel all came thru the same pipe. When your filling the huge above ground storage tanks a little bit of different fuel doesn't matter.
