Wow, I don't really know what to say. That's an extreme catastrophic failure. I can't imagine something like that happening with no warning.

Re: Check this out

And here, my friends, is a perfect example of why BMW will never do anything about rear drive failures!

The front fork failure as shown is obviously a catastrophic failure, and has already caused injury and lawsuits. But, as with most manufacturers, there is somebody sitting with a calculator, determining the expected failure rate and cost of any potential lawsuit for injury vs. the cost of redesigning a component and recalling all the sold units out in use.

Unless and until the feds demand a recall, the company isn't going to voluntarily offer one if it doesn't make sense financially.

When a Pinto (remember those?) gets rear-ended and explodes in a fireball, killing all the occupants of the vehicle, it catches the governments attention. They find out that ALL the cars will do that if hit from the rear, so the potential of death and injury is pretty grave, and a recall is mandated. If your final drive craps out and ruins your trip, well, tough poop. Not all bikes experience the failure, and I know of no deaths caused by rear drive failure to date.
