Q about BMW oil

Since I got a new final drive, I changed the oil once I put 600 miles on her (maintenance schedule has a final drive oil change as part of the 600 mile service). The oil that came out was purple. Looked brand new, just purple. Is this a BMW thing? Is their gear oil purple?

Just curious. No big deal.

And thankfully, the sludge was... sludgy... no slivers. It's interesting becasue the oil on my initial final drive was always dirty (600 mile and 6000 mile).

Re: Q about BMW oil

Can I put some sugar and half-n-half in it or do I have to do it straight?

It kinda tastes... purple.

Re: Q about BMW oil

BMW stuff is red... purple stuff is purple... it may be Royal Purple... not the same and neither as good as Land Rover final drive oil... its oil color.

Re: Q about BMW oil

I use Royal Purple in my engine, tranny and final drive, have had good luck with it so far. I change it every 10,000 miles instead of every 6000 and it still looks good. You can get it at O'rileys. Slightly more expensive than BMW full synthetic.
You can go to there web site and see the with it versus other oils pics. The only thing they don't make is brake fluid.

Re: Q about BMW oil

I used Royal Purlpe in my 2000 RT. I had trouble with the cam chains making noise at idle when hot. I replaced both tensioners and still had the noise. A fellow here sugested changing the oil . Problem solved. No more Royal Purple for me. I only had a couple thousand on the oil at the time.
