Got home from the hosp yesterday, 15 days total. We were in N W Alabama on the trail of tears ride Sept 21, 2nd day of 3 for the ride. Clear, dry, straight, no intersections & no one else involved. We were with about 3-400 other bikes, doing 60 in 65 zone 4 lane divided highway. Had a concussion, so not sure what happened. Rear locked up, drive train failure? know more when get bike home. Judy broke her humorous. I had 5 L back ribs broken, bruised lung, rup spleen-removed. Skinned R knee. They had a 3 for one on the spleen, gall bladder and appendix all at once. First hospital sent me to Huntsville trauma 50 miles by helo. Last week the Med Jet flew us to Syracuse and are shipping bike and trailer. Got home yesterday. Doing great. Legs and arms all work, just some healing in mid section to go.

Check out that med jet, MOA gets a discount. www.bmwmoa.org

Oh, my helmet took a beating!

Re: received this e-mail from a member

Ironic title for a run in his case. bummer
That's pretty unsettling not knowing what caused the loss of control. There have been some recalls about things which can lead to locked rear end and that is a sure way to lose control unexpectedly at any speed above about forty five mph so I'd suspect that was the cause indeed.

unsettling at the least

No matter where you go , there you are.

Re: received this e-mail from a member

The SO and I took a very spirited ride yesterday, running in the 6.5k+ RPM range, and it just puts chills up my spine even to think that would/could happen.
Just one more reason I would like to sell the bike, today.

Very sorry to hear about the accident!

Re: received this e-mail from a member

Wow, that is terrible!

NHTSA and BMW have ignored the final drive issue, because of the ability of the bike to safely get to the side of the road if it fails.
If the cause of this unfortunate crash turns out to indeed be a final drive failure and lockup, maybe BMW and NHTSA will start considering doing something.
BTW, if it does turn out to be a FD failure, SUE THE BASTARDS! It's not like they don't know they have a problem.

These are the pics that Jim sent to me. I presume that he either missed this post or isn't "up to" catching up to the threads.

Re: received this e-mail from a member

WOW!

That does not look like a final drive failure, but for some reason a failure of the swing arm casting. Of course if the final drive locked up there would be a huge twisting pressure applied to the swing arm.

Will be very interested to see if the final drive is indeed locked up, or if something else caused the casting to fail. That is a first that I remember. If it did lock up, the reason why would be the next question.

Re: received this e-mail from a member

That may have been a U-joint failure. Mine was very close to having the same problem at about 160,000 miles. There were no needle bearings left in the rear joint and had a lot of play, if something would have wedged between the joint and casting could have possibly had the same result.

Do we know how many miles on this bike.

Hope the healing goes well.
