Sad Sight in Chicago-Another LT Gone

I pray the rider is OK.

I was heading West into Chicago on I-94 in the pouring rain today, when I came across the accident scene.
There was a silver LT wedged backwards between the Jersy barrier and a van.
The bike did not look to healthy.
I didn't see the rider, I sure hope he is safe.

Re: Sad Sight in Chicago-Another LT Gone

I am in and around Chicago a lot!
There are too many hospitals in that area.

I will be there for two weeks at Thanksgiving...
Or RSNA since I don't get to celebrate turkey day.

The bike looked trashed.
All the luggage was visibly destroyed. Should say all the tupperware front and rear looked destroyed.

Minding my own business riding home from work when a SUV lost it and took me out. There was nothing I could do...it happened so fast I couldn't avoid it or stop. The police gave her 2 tickets. She was totally at fault. Since then I've been in ERs and doctors' offices and I ended up with broken and dislocated wrist, broken collar bone and incredible soreness everywhere. Note a scrape on me due to ATGATT but it doesn't stop your bones from breaking. Today I will be dealing with what to do with the bike. The person who hit me had insurance so hopefully that will work out. I can't believe an LT forum member saw it! Thanks for all the concern. More info later.

Keith, sorry to hear that! I hope you mend well and quickly. Good on the ATGATT that saved your skin, as nothing heals slower than a bad skin rash. I wish you well!

Really relieved you're okay. From the description of the bike it's amazing. Cagers are not to believed sometimes. Wonder if she was on the cell phone or changing CD's or something like that.

I am glad to hear that you did not catapult over the rail.
I am sorry to hear of your injuries, and I am sure you are counting your blessings.

When I went by, the police were looking over the barrier that your bike was pinned to. I could not imagine being in a motorcycle accident and then having to free fall to the ground or even water.

Funny part is; an LT forum member from NC who has a silver LT for sale, saw your crash.
What are the chances.

I wish you a speedy recovery Keith. Friggin Cages....grrrrrr Thanks for posting a report...

About 2 weeks ago I decided to live by ATGATT whenever I head out. (I had been doing local commutes to work without my riding pants (stored in my side case) saving them only for runs on the highway or on longer excursions.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us on the forum. An underscore and Highlight to me that ATGATT is the only way to ride.

Get well soon!

Keith,

Glad to see you survived and are on the mend.

When your wrist heals and you are up to it how about the specifics. As a everyday rider in rush hour traffic maybe I can learn from the details. Or was it as simple as she turned over into you.

Having spent time driving in St. Louis, Minneapolis and Cincinannti traffic I am often in awe to Chicago rush hour traffic - its a race course!!

KK610LT update

Keith took a very hard, high speed hit Tuesday..he was probably doing 60-65 mph when the SUV in next lane suddenly lost control and took him out. I talked with him again this evening and will be visiting with him Saturday. For those of you who don't know him, he is a big man ( 6'10") with an even bigger heart. His attitude is AAA+++, and while he body is healing slowly, his head is as good as ever ! I know he really appreciates all the well wishers here, so please keep up the good thoughts. One fingered typing is not any fun, so while he may not be replying much, he is reading your Forum posts.

Many of you know the "big guy", from the forum or the last two CCRs. Those who have met him, know his gregarious personality, generous heart and infectious laugh.

I've never known a more enthusiastic and capable LT rider and genuine human being. I know he is eager to mend and get back up on 2 wheels, as we've ridden 6-7000 miles together this summer, and many times that over the years.....he is my best friend and riding buddy.

Please keep the "get well wishes" coming and I am sure he will be reading all your notes & posts

Hey Keith...Now you'll have an indicator as to when cold/bad weather is coming! Broken collarbones are great for that. DAMHIK Anyway, all jokes aside, I am VERY thankful that you are going to be better soon. I'll be praying!

Keith,
You are in my Prayers. Hope you heal soon.
The "less than ideal" riding weather is almost here. (Look at bright side, it's not May 10th.)
Shopping for a new bike yet? How many bikes are comfortable for a 6'10" guy?
Glad you are getting better.

Hey, Keith - Glad you made it thru. ATGATT worked for me, too - a couple breaks, but nothing serious. The LT protected me a bit, too, gave its life doing it. Heal well. Remember - listen to your body. The degree to which you listen to your body regarding activity is the degree to which you will heal. The degree you give in to the "I gotta to this . . ." is the degree to which you will lay down scar tissue. Made a difference for me.

Re: Sad Sight in Chicago-Another LT Gone

Hi Keith,

So I guess a RTE next week is out of the question. I was hoping it wasn't anyone on the forum, but since it is, it's a relief to know that you're doing much better than should be expected considering the unthinkable event that you went through. I ride I-88 daily and am soooooo relieved when I get to the "express" section heading west. I'll take the slower route just to know that a cage can't cut me off or worse, while we're driving single file. I'm sure there are other ways they can get me, but it's a bit more limited there.
I really, really hope you recover soon and we can finally coordinate a RTE.

Best wishes,
Jer

saw my bike today, here is the short scoop:
big scrapes and scratches on front fender, both side cases, faring, bumpers, and top case.
cracked faring, and windshield.
broken j-pegs, antenna, brake lever, muddiman armrest, and moto-light.
bent brake pedal.
headlight is in the bag of goodies picked up from the ground.
both mirrors broken off, not just popped loose.
handlebars are down to just above the tank.
ignition assembly is jammed up/key won't turn.
seat doesn't want to pop up easily? i don't know why.

Re: Sad Sight in Chicago-Another LT Gone

Glad to hear you are OK. Mechanicals can be replaced. Heal well, and quick! Just think, you now have more time to keep in touch while you get better... keep us posted of your progress.

Best regards...

Mugz

Keith, sorry to hear about your crash, but great to hear that you subscribe to the motto ATGATT! Broken bones are bad, but they would be even worse if you had the road rash on top of everything else!

Plenty of time to watch the new Bikes coming out while you mend. And at least it is not in the middle of riding weather!

Rest, and follow what your physical therapist tells you to do when it comes time. It does work! DAMHIK.

Keith

You weren't wearing your funny hat again. I told you that people only see you when you wear your funny hat.

Bob called the thank God you are the Big Guy and will heal quickly. Of course, are you still in the learning stage of riding an LT??????
