Barber motorsports museum has a great example of this bike, and one with the v twin sitting sideways in the frame also.

Re: What Is This?

I know of it because I thought it an interesting sidenote to mc history that the US Govt said, damn them BMW's are nice- we gotta have one. Just think what the boxer engine could have been had Harley got it right with their amazing marketing abilities!

Re: What Is This?

Correct me if wrong...but the way I have heard the story told is that the U.S. military asked both HD & Indian to come up with a military motorcycle that wouldn't break down like the V-twins with chain drive...& they both copied the BMW.

Wouldn't surprise me if it is, I'll ask next time I see him.
20+ years ago I remember he was "experimenting" running tubeless auto tires on spoked wheel rims rubber washers on each spoke inside the rim
and lotsa silicone sealer etc.

The story he told me about the XA was,
he found it at a yard sale in California, showed the guy a picture of a Panhead he had in Florida and arranged a trade, rode home, put the Panhead in a truck drove it to California, loaded the XA and drove home.

he's the "real" thing when it comes to being a rider,
a "stand up" guy that has ridden his rigid frame Panhead to Sturgis
every year for at least 35 years that I know of.

Interesting observation and also the source of much debate
that goes back to 1922 when Harley Davidson made the first "fore-aft"
horizontally opposed cylinder engine,
we already know who's best, so who was first?

This thread is really interesting. I love it when you discuss antique/rare motorcycles and one turns up (running even!).
