Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I went to Destination Cycles in Lenior, TN last Friday and figured that I would head back through the Gap.

I got stuck behind more inexprienced riders in eleven miles than should have ever graduated from MSF.

So might as well play along.

Check out the lean angle... I doubt I broke the speed limit five times.
Deal's Gap is terrible this time of year.
I sure can't wait for Christmas.

Mike,
I will verify that.
I go up a couple of times a week.
Decided to go up last night after work.
It was a night mare.
Took forever to get up there.
There are so many cops up there that they have turned the best motorcycle road in the country into the worst.
See ya.

Sorry, I don't mean to insult you but... I have to say Deal's Gap never was the best motorcycle road in the world! It is very good, but "the best in the world"? I think it might be the most famous motorcycle road in the US.

I sure can't wait for Christmas.

I am not trying to start anything but feel I have to say, This reminds me of people bitching about the other riders at Sturgis.

There are a lot of GOOD riders that just want to see the scenery and slow down to do so! I just rode deals gap for the first time and, silly me, never broke the speed limit, and compared to Il saw some great sites on a great rode.

It sounds like you are riding in your own back yard and ride the gap often. I think any responsible rider takes things slower on a new rode then on one they ride a lot.

In a lot of the midwest a curve is when the rode shifts 2" in a mile so we do not get a lot of practice on the wonderful roads you have.

I ride so I can see more of this great country and there is nothing better the the sites from a motorcycle seat!

If you are lucky enough to ride Deal gap often maybe you should look at it like gambling. Sometime you can ride as fast as you want (that would be a win), sometimes people will slow you down (a loss??). Either way I would think it was fun.

I have tried to stay off of the Dragon and with all of the LEO's, and the speed limit at 30 , I mean what the heck!

And you Mr Murphy NC and Mr Alcoa need to think about attending the Fall Reunion at Irohnorse this October. We have comedians, entertainers, split personalities, Chocolate Brownie Sundaes, best Prime Rib around, a lot of story-telling (a lot), great company, Lynn and his cheap tents and other things that I dare mention.

I have not seen a minimum speed limit sigh on that section of US129
Lets see you are bitched because some riders are riding at a safe and legal speed and in your way in not letting you ride at a speed that TNDOT deems
unsafe and illegal .

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I tell older riders like myself who may be hesitant about roads like the Dragon to just take it easy, take it slow and enjoy yourself. It is fun slow, fast or in between.

For those more daring, ride these roads in the early autumn prior to colors kicking in and drawing more crowds.

Obviously said by someone who has never ridden much. 11 miles, 318 turns, big whup.

There are plenty of better motorcycle roads. Deals gap, while fun and makes for a very technical highway ride, it is hardly "the best".

One such road

Or this one

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I've rode the gap many times, boys. What's to see? A bunch of green. There's prettier scenery in that state. To deliberately ride slow to hold someone up, and even worse, to keep someone from passing you is just downright hateful.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

It won't be long before that road is essentially shut down for bikes. That's why this year I took vacation to Nova Scotia instead of Deals Gap (which is where I would have liked to have gone) and I'm really glad that I did. Had an adventure, made some new friends and wasn't worried about getting hit by some Joe-racer, or being hassled by the LEO. We should all send a thank you letter to Darryl Cannon for all of his fine work.
This isn't new

All those roads are great, but can you beat the Swiss Alps? And no one has mentioned Copper Canyon in Mexico. Makes Deals Gap look like a amatuer hour.

Exactamundo. It's only 11 miles.

BTW, Kevin, you act like all the problems at Deals Gap are the result of Darryl. Actually, it's the reverse. Darryl is a result of Deals Gap. It was a mecca for motorcyclists LONNNNNG before Darryl, and it will remain so long after him.

You want some serious riding? Here's my favorite: CA 36 (best eaten from east to west). If an extended set of twisties doesn't take the better part of a full tank, why waste your time?

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I was there a week ago Thursday. There was 1 sportsbike and 1 sherrif car (together, off the side of the road ) and maybe 2-3 cruisers.

Unfortunately I was in the car, with the family. The dresser I was following finally pulled over to let me by. (I was doing the speed limit).

It was very empty.

I did find out I could do the gap faster on my Sportster than in the family car...... can't wait to get the BMW down there.

Yes, other roads are more fun, and others are more scenic. I enjoy them all.

Try Mount Evans in Colorado - very fun.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

You really can't complain that the sportbike crowd ruined Deal's Gap.

The cruiser crowd out numbers the sportbikes 6 to 1.
Today looking over the store parking lot, I could not see one sportbike.

As for breaking the speed limit on Deal's Gap... The speed limit is 30mph.
If a rider or multiple riders can not get past 20mph on this road, there is no excuse for them to be on a motorcycle.

The picture posted was at about 15mph following two sportbikes.
No one that I got stuck behind was site seeing. They were scared.
Scared is not how to ride a motorcycle in the mountains.
Confident is the attitude you need to ride a bike safely anywhere.

I very rarely ride Deal's Gap during the riding season.
But once in a while I need to refresh my memory.

And can somone please tell me what there is to see on Deal's Gap?
It is not a site seeing road. There are green trees and mountain sides.
There is no scenery.

60 in North Georgia now has fresh pavement about twenty miles of it.
360 from Telico to Vonroe, TN now has fresh pavement.

There are so many better roads.
Soon it will be cold and the roads will belong to the true riders and the posers will be back in the bars.

You are right the Alps are great but you should try the Pyrenees! You will find beautiful scenery, well maintained roads, and no traffic.

And I'm with you about Deals Gap. I don't ride it anymore. Twenty years ago it was great but it's too crowded now and there are a whole lot better places to ride in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.

No, I'm not going to tell you where they are.

Amen to that! I followed one guy on a cruiser up the mountain. His turn signal was on the whole way. He had a death grip on the handlebars. He hardly leaned his bike at all. It was like he was steering a car.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Don't go on a public roadway where the speed limit is 30 MPH and complain that people riding the speed limit are slowing you down.

If you want to go really fast, find a track day at a racetrack and see if you have the balls to ride with the REALLY fast guys. You may find out that your riding skills get humbled when some 16 yr old on a 250cc Ninja blows by you on the inside at the apex of a turn you are taking "flat out".

Otherwise, be thankful that "slow" person in front of you held you up so the LEO on the side of the road with the radar gun didn't catch you. Riding "confidently" on an unfamiliar road is a good way to find yourself coming out of a turn in completely the wrong spot to get into the following curve. Everyone's level of "confidence" varies - if it's the first time riding what is well known to be a technically challenging section of road, cut the guy some slack.

It's true that it's been a mecca for a long time, thing is not that many people really knew about it until Darryl and crew got involved and started marketing the shit out of it for their own benefit. Now, it's just another overexposed and over ridden road that's a great place to get hit or get arrested.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

Just three random comments on DG...

- It is a fun road, but an overrated one.

- I rode it a year ago around 8:00a on a weekday. Empty.

- A friend of mine recorded the whole 11 mile DG stretch from his VFR. I decided to stare at the PC monitor and count the curves. Even being gracious by counting the slightest of bends, I came up with 184 curves!?! Not even close to touted 318.

Anyone ever tried the PA Grand Canyon or the surrounding roads? Watch for deer and bear though.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I think that you guys and gals are getting the wrong idea about what has been said about Deals Gap.
It is not that we are trying to tear the road up with speed.
Most up at the Gap like to ride it 5 to 10 miles faster than the posted speed.
If you do, you will have a great ride.
What is going on now is that it has become so popular that it is bumper to bumper the biggest majarity of time, and more so since all the cops are up there now, except for a few occasions.
I will be the first to say that it does need the cops on it, but not that many.
There is more cops up there in 11 miles than any other place in the nation in 11 miles.
When it was lawless, as I call it, it was really not fun, but dangerous.
Now if you are a couple of mph over the speed they will motion you over.
Most of us like to ride it the same way you guys and gals ride to ride your rodes and interstates, 5 to 10 miles over the posted.
We are not any more of an outlaw than you are.
I hope that there is another , or several other better roads in this country to ride a motorcyce. I hope all of you go and find them and stay off the Gap. We will take our little Gap in the country and be satisfied.

Especially in winter with salt and gravel all over the place

And as others have said, and Mike knows well, there are tons of other great rides all over this area.

I rode last month to Charleston, WV and took the back roads all the way through, NC, TN, VA, KY, and WV. 350 miles of Rt194's, Hwy 80's, Hwy 129's.

Even caught some gravel roads. One of those rides that should have been documented for a "Rider" article.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

Quite frankly, (and this won't come as a shock to many that I've spoken to), I think 'The Tail of the Dragon' is way over-rated. I can list 5 roads that I'd rather ride in that area alone, forgetting about the rest of the country.

But if one really wants to ride Deal's Gap, there are plenty of opportunities to ride that road when it is entirely VACANT. And we all (should) know when to stay OFF OF IT. The posers, squids, and tourists start showing up later in the week ... and continue to muck it up until Sunday afternoon. Heck!...even early Sunday mornings The Gap is typically empty. Know when to ride it, and when to stay off of it. That'll save y'all a bunch of aggrevation.

An interesting comment. It led me to pull up MapSource and count the curves on the laptop. In that mapping software, DG has well over 318 curves ... if you count every last one of them. So I guess it comes down to what one counts as a curve. I've ridden it dozens of times, and I can say for sure that, "It has a LOT of curves.".

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

I just got back from a few days around Deals Gap....rode the Dragon once, on Friday, 2-up, behind a cage who only exceeded 15 MPH, according to my yet-to-be-corrected speedometer, exactly twice. I guess the new challenge is to see how heavy a bike you can ride that slowly, without crossing lines or putting your feet down. Wife was happy that the only part of the bike to touch the ground were the tires. The Cherohala Skyway was much more fun. Speed limit 45, and you could actually get to that speed everywhere along its length.

Curious... I just counted the curves on Streets & Trips and it was far less than 184?!? And as noted, I was gracious with what I counted in the vid -- from the resort to the lookout. Only thing I can guess is perhaps this isn't the full 11 miles, but things straighten out before and after these demarcations.

Re: Just about the only fun Left on Deal's Gap

You have to count from the Dam to the lake.

The store to the lookout is only about eight miles.
Most people never ride the entire eleven miles.

I do this little jaunt about once a week just because it is pretty, quick and close.

I do want to ride Deals Gap once I move back to the States. Just one of those "things I've gotta do", ya know?

I have found out for me that I would rather ride Deals Gap or the Skyway Monday thru Thursday a lot less traffic.

Been there. Done that. (I lived in Germany for four years.) Is that the route that is closed to motorcycles over the weekend?

As others have noted, Deal's Gap is okay if you go there during the week.

I agree. There are several great roads around the Deal's Gap area. The Dragon COULD be a great place to ride except for the many, many idiots there on two and four wheels.....but mainly two wheels, unfortunately. Now I am no Canyon Ace, but I've seen "kids" on crotch rockets doing u-turns on blind corners, etc, etc. I've had fun on runs there, but I am careful about when I go. During the day and never on a weekend is the best bet.

Most famous motorcycle road....probably, but surely the most INfamous road, eh?

Hate to suggest this publicly, but you just gotta pass those guys. It's tricky. Gotta find just the right place. but it can be done. they usually look very shocked when you do that. I was just there last week and rode the dragon six times in all. Had a blast, but at times had to pass the slower folk who definitely should not have been there.

You said a mouthful Mike.

Back when I was riding an LT, I passed a GoldWing that was following a small car which was following a 1-ton pickup truck. You haven't ridden the Dragon unless you've passed somebody ... right? The fellow LTer behind me thought that I was a dead man for sure. Naw! Not dead . . . just stupid. But sometimes, stupid feels so right. Of course, my acts of stupidity are much more calculated these days.

Pretty much anywhere along the Mosel or Rhine rivers is a beautiful ride, bike or car.
