Unhappy Drive Squeal- I smell major repairs$$

Driving to work, second gear, 30 mph. Suddenly there is a horrible squealing noise and the cluth is slippping, or at least power to the rear wheel is lost. Shifted to neutral, the noise stopped. Pushed to a parking lot (whew!) and started it up just fine. Shifted to first and the noise returned as the engine quickly died. I am thinking the dry clutch on my 01 LT is no longer dry. Recently changed all fluids, no issues. Anyone remember where the tie-down instructions for this thing are at?

Sounds more like a driveshaft problem. The rubber bushing connecting both halves may be tearing/slipping. Worn out clutch won't squeal.

Document is under files/technical documents

used driveshafts are easy to find.

Thanks for the tie down info.

Any more thoughts on the squealing?

First thing check and see if you have any fluid left in your clutch reservoir.

Got lots of DOT 4 in the clutch reservoir. I plan on draining all the fluids and checking quantity and quality on the way out. The noise is apparent even in neutral, but goes away after shifting into gear. All with absolutely zero power to the rear wheel.

Input spline and clutch plate, various seals and a bearing or 2. $2805.21 at my friendly neighborhood BMW shop. They told me it was not caused by my riding technique or poor maintenance, but that sometimes "these things just go bad". Needless to say, no help from the factory on this one. I feel ripped off. This is a 2000 with about 25K miles.

OUCH!!!!

Although it's true that "these things just go bad", that's a lot of money to fix a toy!!! We don't want to spend that much to fix "a toy!"

Toys should not break.

If it was "just a toy" I would sell it and get a new one. This is my first non-HD touring bike since 1984. Everyone sez Harleys are unreliable. In 20 years and 4 FLH models, I was never once stranded, and never once did anything more than preventative maintenance.
