Sad news

I have a friend who is on his dream trip to Alaska. He left about 4 weeks ago. He went with two other others, one his old partner on the PD. My friend and his buddies were all riding the big touring HD's, sorry don't remember the names. My friend had an accident in late March and broke two ribs, cracked collar bone, 42 stitches in his lip and chin and did not remember what happened. So he was glad to be able to go on the trip.

Today I heard that my friend's Co-rider hit a deer in Montana and died later from the injuries. The other two stayed on the journey after they made the arrangements to fly the partner's body back home. Friend will be back to work in two weeks and I am curious as to the particulars, whether he was wearing ATGATT.

Re: Sad news

Wow... very sad indeed. It is a LONG, lonely, doubtful, question filled ride back home when you lose a friend. I know.

All this week I have been at Myrtle Beach watching young sport bike rider and older harley riders wearing no protection at all. Speeding, driving recklessly. It is really insane.

That would be a sobering trip back. I'm curious how you know Jack.

My best wishes to his family and friends. Whatever the circumstances, it's a shocking loss.

Yeah! That would be one tough trip back home.

Lost my best friend's brother on a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway once. We were riding hard, very hard, I saw the turn ahead and remembered it was an indreasing radius. He didn't know and as he passed me he beeped his horn twice, and accelerated into the sharp right hander. I was still on the brakes hard as he passed. When I came out of the turn, he was simply gone...just gone. I had a sick feeling and then ran his brother down (he was in front). Getting him to pull over I asked, "Did Terry pass you?" "No...he didn't pass me" was his answer. And I knew where he was...he flew his bike over a cliff.

I went back and found him, deceased...his bike was over the railing at least 100-200 feet below. Trust me, it was a L-O-N-G ride back home. Just couldn't believe it and kept waiting to see him ride up beside me and confirm that it was just a dream. It wasn't.

I will be praying for these riders coming back from Alaska. Any updates?

Pastor,
No updates as of yet from my coworker. He will be back to work on the 16th. I did read the obituary on the fallen rider. It was in the July 17th Mesa Tribuine on line. He was an usher in my co-worker's church. Try this link it is about the fallen rider.

That's a sobering story Jack. Those things change you. I was mad at my brother when he dumped my Harley riding into Borrego Springs. He kept saying how lucky he was he didn't go over the edge. I kept thinking how he wrecked my bike. Because I wasn't involved, I didn't feel the fear of death that he did. I should've been less angry, and more relieved his injuries were superficial.

Here's hoping none of us has to ride home "minus one" in the future. Again, condolences to Robert's family.

Re: Sad news

Hving just finished a long trip to the east coast and back and having seen lots and lots and lots of bikers on the way, my estimate is about 1 in 100 (and that may be conservative) wear ATGATT). Most don't even have helmets unless it's the law.
