I have had Monkey Butt and really do not like it. I bought the powder about two years ago and it does work. Good stuff.

Also looks like it contains an anti-fungal agent to prevent jock-itch or other hot spots. OR, you could order one of Ron's seats! I love the concept of a breathable seat. Now, I use a beadrider if it's really hot, but it takes awhile to adapt. Cools REALLY good...just a bit hard. butt, No Monkey Butt!

It's not a real day of riding if you don't get some monkey butt. Take it like a man and at the end of a long day, find a good sitz bath.

I disagree. And besides, what do yo do the second day? Or the third? And what if one of my days equals 4 or 5 of yours, and I'm still comfortable at the end of it? Does that mean I'm not a "real man" or that I'm just smart enough to have solved that particular little problem? If you wanna ride in pain and discomfort, that's up to you. But not me.

Re: Monkey butt .... NO MORE !! ...Cure found !

I have two brands of wicking underwear... Patagonia Capilene which is more costly but the top of the line. The other is the REI brand MTS (moisture transfer system).

I like both in the mid-length... longer leg... goes about halfway down your thigh. I found that buying one size smaller then my regular underwear size worked far better on the bike.

I also found that the less costly REI brand has more support and is ultimately more comfortable. In a long trip I take both and alternate, washing out the used one at night. Both are quick dry.

Enjoy.

Eggsackery - except they have the added benefit of elastic cuffs that can help promote deep vein thrombosis.

This warning comes from non other than Don Arthur - a prominent LD rider, Vice Admiral and Surgeon General of the Navy... he recommended cutting them. $44.95 and you have to modify them to keep from getting a stroke...

I absolutley crack up whenever I see generic, commodity items like underwear and baby powder being marketed as "motorcycle specific" items. Harley is of course notorious for this - but also make a TON of profit from this type of "branding".

Go with these for $29.99:

Here is a link to a story that mentions Don's talk at the IBA National meeting in Omaha concerning tight fitting clothing. Perhaps you were in the audience? I don't recall his cutting recommendation butt then again I don't wear 'tourniquets'.

He actually did a fairly lengthy white paper on it that I read. I've lost the link - but I'm sure its floating around out there somewhere in cyberspace. Or, you could just dial him up for a copy, he's a great guy. I spent quite a bit of time chatting with him about seat design.

I seem to remember the feature he was talking about is the "The one-way gripper leg " that they advertise as being an important feature to keep them from "riding up."

All I personally know is a warning from my wife (a surgical RN first assist for an orthopedic hospital) is that patients have been dying from tourniquets and associated blood clots from standard knee surgery - a VERY simple procedure. The Doctors have been advised to use them with great caution and to release them immediately after the procedure is finished - not even 30 seconds longer. Granted that a lot of the patients they see are obese and in poor health to begin with - that's why they usually need knee replacements - so they may be much more pre-disposed to clots to begin with. I don't really know if this has any direct comparison to LD motorcycle riding but it is alarming.

LD Comfort Shorts could be the greatest thing since sliced bread - but when a guy like Don offers advice I tune in...

www.wickers.com, www.underarmor.com, www.5.11.com or just try googling "wicking undergarmets"

When you get some, try the MBP with it as a combination. Works for me..

I too pay attention to others unless their remarks are a general distortion of someone else's comments and intended solely to impact the use of a spectfic product.

As Seargent Joe Friday used to say: "I just want the facts, mam. Just the facts."

Here's what Connie Fitch (RIP) said on October 31st, 2005: (Connie was a distinguished member of the LD community and a close personal friend of Don's, so I don't think her remarks are "distorted")

"I've purchased the LD riding short... I thought I was getting something superior with the $35.00 price on the LD's but all I get is a loss of circulation in my legs cause the elastic bands are so friggin tight.
I know I should not add to this post for obvious reasons, BUTT...In a seminar of Long Distance Riders our very own Don Arthur made a comment (as a guest speaker) about shorts for LD riding. He said the first thing you should do before wearing LD Comfort riding shorts is to cut the elastic on both legs.It turns out that this could cause DVT Deep Vein Thrombosis which could result in a lot more than a little discomfort. Needless to say the elastic cuts off your blood flow. ...Just thought you should know."

I know of MANY other riders that have complained about the same issue - and if you like I will be happy to dig up their comments as well.

So don't get your panties in a wad!

Ron,
You make a mistake by shooting your mouth off when you DO NOT know what you are talking about. You find pleasure in knocking down another man’s product while taking every opportunity to boost your own. You miss quote and take out of context material about a subject and apply it to a product YOU KNOW NOTHING about. With your uneducated spouting and slanderous statements you raise yourself up to a level of dumbass when you attack a product in your insecure attempts to make yourself look intelligent. As many times as I have read your posts I have remained silent with the trust others can see your desperate drivel. Now I refuse to sit here and watch you make false statements and miss represent my product when you are too ignorant to do a little research before you begin slinging your crap.

You quote Don Arthur who did discuss deep vein thrombosis but then apply it to LDComfort specifically. If a rider is wearing something that tight it is indeed a mistake but that is not the design of LDComfort Riding Shorts. The gripper in our garments is designed for traction and not constriction. A sizing issue is the only way to come up with any constriction. You could simply “dial up” Mr. Don Arthur and find out he is very happy with his own LDComfort Riding Shorts and compliments me on a very fine product. Why don’t you get that information and spread that around? Stop using Don’s warning and applying it to my product which is NOT designed for constriction or compression.

Then too Ron, if you knew enough of the Long Distance Riders in the Iron Butt Association who ride thousands of miles per week you would find many satisfied customers who ride in LDComfort. Why don’t you ask the winner of the ’05 Iron Butt how much he appreciated LDComfort when he won that 11 day rally? Why don’t you ask the Chief Technical Inspector of the Iron Butt Association who holds the world record of 10,636 miles in under a week how he likes his pair of LDComfort Riding Shorts? Why don’t you ask the holder of the Australian Cross Country record how he likes his LDComfort garments? Why don’t you look and see that Gary Eagan set his Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Key West, Florida record while wearing LDComfort? Perhaps you don’t know many of these people. I have yet to ask these folks if they ride on your seat. Or, should we go there?
When it comes to wicking and keeping the skin dry there are NO other garments that will keep the rider dryer than LDComfort. If you pour water into our fabric and wring it you will find the inside is dry, even when the garment is wringing wet. That is one reason for the cost. I use the best fabric on the market. I can make LDComfort out of any fabric I want. I can make it as cheap as the garments you use but then it wouldn’t work. If you use a cheaper fabric you will be looking for powders to absorb the moisture that should have been taken care of by properly designed undergarments made specifically for the motorcycle rider. You can roll your cow eyes all you want, but you have ZERO experience with LDComfort as a company or as a product. NONE. You just love to shoot your mouth off. You take your underwear and your seat and I’ll take my underwear and my seat and we’ll see how far you can get before you are crying for Monkey Butt powder. If you want to look me up you can meet me in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Iron Butt Association National Meeting where I will be a vendor. I'll be easy for you to find because I'll be standing right next to Don Arthur. You are planning on being there, aren’t you?
Respectfully, Mario

Have mercy on yourself.

Quite simply, the material they use is superior to anything else out there. I stay dry and comfortable from freezing temps to well over 100 degrees. It just plain works. And don't underestimate the lack of seams (or really, the proper placement of seams to minimize wear and discomfort). That is a fairly simple concept than many manufacturers either don't understand, or they ignore so as to get more product out of a fixed piece of material (saving them money while selling you an inferior product).

As for the leg bands, they are very grippy and they don't go all the way around your legs. So there is no risk of cutting off blood flow, period.

I have a couple pairs of Under Armor gear, as well as some off-brand stuff. They sit at home on the shelf, mostly due to the fact that they're always slipping down and the fact that they don't work well over a very wide temperature range. They're just not comfortable for the long haul, so they stay home. Cheaper doesn't matter if the product doesn't work.

My LDComfort stuff goes everywhere on the bike with me. I have three full sets and have lived in those for weeks at a time while on the road. I'm about to embark on another 2-week, 10,000 mile ride and all I need is my LDComfort gear and one pair of jeans and a nice shirt in case I feel like going out to dinner one night. Simply put, this stuff works for me so it was worth the price I paid. Kinda like the bike itself, for that matter.

I like the powder. But then again I use it for a short ride (35 miles) then work all day in a hot factory and ride back home. Sometimes the ride home is longer still haven't figured that out. hehehe

I really don't think you were out of line at all. You should be able to post about your products especially if they are being misaligned for no good reason. They are people here who don't know when to keep their opinions to themselves.

I've seen too many threads that started with "Anybody have one of these?" and the thread turns to shit with all kinds of negative bashing. A recent post about extended warranties comes to mind...

Keep it real and don't sweat it. After all, it's just the damn internet

For whatever it is worth... I think you did the right thing to apologize.

Your reply was obviously filled with emotion and your "message" got all tangled up with it. I think I can feel free to say that because I have had to apologize more than once on forums like this and I have learned that if I rely to a post and I have a lot of emotion invested- it is best to write it and then let it rest for a few minutes, before hitting the submit key... write in haste- edit at leisure.... works for me.

thanks again for the stand-up apology.
