Unhappy HELP!! Screwed up my GS Fuel Tank

I was servicing my R1100GS today and while reinstalling the fuel pump into the tank one of the 6 mounting studs that holds it in place in the tank snapped off. It doesn't look like the stud can be replaced but I'm hoping someone has some advice or hints on how to fix this without having to replace the entire tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Can you post a picture so we can see what you are dealing with?

I'd bet it can be repaired, but need to see what you're up against.

Get on the parts microfiche and see what's up. I'll be you're going to buy an Inner ring with all the bolts attached.. Or something like that...

The microfiche should break it down for you so you can see the individual pieces that make up the assembly.. If BMW intends for you to buy a new tank. Shame on them...

Re: HELP!! Screwed up my GS Fuel Tank

Well, my situation has turned for the better. A fellow NorCal rider had a GS tank sitting around (he swapped it out for an Adventure tank), and I just went and picked it up! It's bright red (my bike's black) and has a small dent, but the fuel pump studs are in great shape. So this at least gets me where I can get the bike rideable in the next few days in time for my ride and stuff next week. I'm still going to see if I can get mine fixed (got info on ADV Rider that it is possible to replace the studs if you can find someone who will weld/braise fuel tanks) so I'm going to pursue that route first. If I can't then it will be dent fixing and repaint time for this one.

Hmm, I wonder if I can enter a rat bike contest with it now??

Re: HELP!! Screwed up my GS Fuel Tank

It may be too late to help..
But my 1100GS has the fuel filter mounted outside the tank..
It helps w/ service etc.
Let me know if you want pics..
I did not do the modification the previous owner did.
Might save you the cost of a paint job.

Re: HELP!! Screwed up my GS Fuel Tank

I got the "new" tank installed tonight. After runnig into one fuel line leak after I got the bike back together (isn't that always the way?) everything is purring like a kitten! It does look a little funky with a red tank and black everything else, but what the hell, it runs! I also got a line on a guy here in San Jose who apparently is a wizard with welding and such, so I'm going to get in touch with him in the next couple of days to see if he can fix the original tank for less than it will cost to paint the one I just bought as a backup.
